The City of Bridgeport released data Thursday on the shocking number of drivers caught on camera illegally passing stopped school buses in the city since the beginning of the school year.
From Sept. 3, 2023 to Feb. 3, 2024, nearly 10,000 motorists passed school buses that were stopped with lights flashing, according to Bridgeport officials.
The incidents were captured by cameras on the school buses. The city released video of some of the incidents.
“It is unacceptable that there are motorists who are blatantly putting our children in danger by illegally passing stopped school buses," Mayor Joseph Ganim said in a statement. "We will take the necessary steps to crack down on these violations to ensure that our children are not being threatened by the carelessness of drivers while school buses are making their pickup and drop-off routes.”
In all, cameras on 74 buses captured 9,860 incidents of drivers illegally passing school buses, according to Bridgeport officials. That breaks down to 75 violations per weekday, city officials said.
The bus stop with the highest number of violations was the 100 block of Logan Street with 1,671 violations, according to the data. That is almost three times as many violations as the next highest stop in the 100 block of Davenport Street.

There is something bizarrely wrong with that. It signifies a deeper rot of some kind.
Since it’s Bridgeport, I guess the drivers were going to the nearest drug house. 🤓
That one. You can see it isn't something important. Often they are smiling and grinning. That one gets me.
That and the teenager who comes out of the house as the bus waits, traffic stopped in both directions, and the slow, methodical slouching walk out to the bus.
When I see that, it makes me pretty angry. It isn't just selfish inconsideration.
It seems like malignant inconsideration. Eh. I have taken to driving to work so early that there are few people on the road, and no school buses.
Demographics would suggest the majority. I would also like to know how many are women Anecdotally, I don't recall reading a news story on this where it was a man caught doing this. I imagine that police records for those actually ticketed who tell us that. If...the police and government were willing to look at it.
I did. I thought I was agreeing with you :-)
I suspect it was the way you ended your post that threw me off. I think we are in agreement...
You know, I recall you and I may have had another exchange on something in which I responded in similar way, and in the end, we were in agreement. In the last month or two, I suppose)
In my case it is probably due to that old adage that states something along the lines of “when discussing anything, if there is a “but” in the sentence, pay less attention to what comes before the “but” and more attention to what comes AFTER the “but”.
You didn’t say “but” and said “nevertheless”...so I think on my part, I have to divorce myself somewhat from that adage. I think it puts me into a combative mode when I don’t need to be.
I was probably sensitive to being attacked for saying anything that could be misconstrued as supporting people breaking the law and running down little kids simply because I didn’t like the current process of getting kids to school...
Since it’s Bridgeport, 95%!!
