California wolves have killed 18 livestock since August 2023, according to wolf depredation reports posted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).

These reports were posted as part of CDFW’s evaluation of the Wolf-Livestock Compensation Pilot Program. According to wolf.org, depredation is when wolves or other predators kill or maim domestic animals.

This endangered species was found in Tulare County According to the CDFW, the depredation reports confirm 16 wolf depredations – totaling a loss of 18 livestock. State officials say there is a program in place to compensate livestock producers for livestock being lost.

According to the state, the gray wolf is a recovering endangered species protected under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Federal Endangered Species Act. The native species was likely forced out of California in the 1920s, according to wildlife.ca.gov.

The livestock death toll from other causes is probably much higher than 18

True, but there are very few wolves in CA. They only reentered the state a few years ago.

So if I survive the zombie apocalypse, I can expect to get eaten by wolves.

Swell.

Of course all livestock dies - doesn’t mean ranchers need apex predators culling their herds.

We also don’t need reintroduction NGO scams/gravytrain.

The livestock death toll from wolves is probably also a lot higher than 18. Envirowackos demand wolf reintroduction. Government goes along with it because anything to limit the rights of citizens even more than the are now is a good idea from the government point of view. Wolves kill livestock. Rancher puts in claim. Government slow walks claim. Government denies part of claim. Rancher gets paid small fraction of livestock loss value. Taxpayer gets stuck for whatever it costs to A. Reintroduce wolves B. Support bureaucracy to keep track of wolves. C. administer the claims. D. And finally whatever the rancher actually gets paid for his losses

Would make more sense for wolf reintroducers to be fed to the wolves.

I’m guessing it’s illegal for a rancher to kill a wolf in California.

In MN, it’s SSS. I suspect it’s the same in other troubled states.
You almost never see a dead Timberwolf, but I’ve seen hair in the back of more than a few local pickups.

There’s are good reasons wolves and grizzlies were wiped out by our ancestors in many states. Those reasons still apply, though the lotus eaters of the Left will never get that.

The cowboys on the Yellowstone / Dutton Ranch nearly got in big trouble for shooting a couple wolves that were killing cattle.... At least on TV. I guess they should have taken the carcasses to ‘The Train Station’ instead of trying to send their radio collars downstream.

Need to introduce those wolves back into their original native habitat .... NYC, NJ, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle, etc.

I can only imagine the pushback in California towards any effort to keep them in check. And they spread like crazy.
Should be fun to watch over the next few years.

S.S.S. Shoot Shovel and shut up! Oh yes, take the tracking collar off of them and tie it to a log and toss it in a local stream.

Not sure there is any black market for that stuff. It was really hard to get ahold of 50 years ago (know this from a friend) I don’t know if they even make it anymore.
