If the leading candidate was to drop out of the campaign after most primaries or even during the convention, individual delegates would likely decide the party’s nominee on the convention floor.
That would shine a spotlight on the normally niche question of who those actual delegates are.
There would be a messy political battle in every state over who would get to be a delegate (if the vacancy happened before many of those people were chosen) and then who they would ultimately support. Even people who did not run primary campaigns could ultimately be considered.
You can assume, for instance, that Vice President Kamala Harris would be a top contender to be on the ballot if, for some reason, Biden left the race. At the same time, given Haley’s weakness in primaries, it seems unlikely that Republicans would coalesce around her if Trump was unable to run.
On the Democratic side, there would also be another group to consider: the “superdelegates,” a group of about 700 senior party leaders and elected officials who are automatically delegates to the convention based on their position. Under normal party rules, they can’t vote on the first ballot if they could swing the nomination, but they’re free to vote on subsequent ballots.

Yep, the sudden and universal change in media tenor regarding Biden (they got their marching orders) seems to suggest we’re in the groundwork-laying phase.
the set-up
Think of Bobby Kennedy in 1968 and Gary Hart in 1987.
“Even people who did not run primary campaigns could ultimately be considered.”

Pollutico put out a piece the other day on the Dem ‘Plan B’.

Yeah, Biden needs to hire a pudding taster. He about to drop over dead.
President Potato Head is not long for this world because his growing dementia has rendered him no longer fit-for-purpose and he must be tossed aside. The fact that he doesn’t refuses to leave will force the Uniparty to ease him into the next world.
The MSM is floating options for kicking Biden to the curb.
What they really want is to take out both Trump and Biden.
What if a political convention had trouble deciding to nominate a man or a woman....
Why, they’d nominate someone that had traits of both.
setting the table
I wonder if Trump and Biden are off the table if Xi Jinping would be willing to step into the breach?
“Biden needs to hire a pudding taster. He about to drop over dead”
You’ll know if they begin to allow him to use the big boy stairs on AF-1.....he’s about to be “epsteined”.

That was a good piece, very informative. Here’s one thing I never knew “But in one way, Trump’s grasp on the GOP nomination may be stronger than Biden’s on the Democratic side: Delegates to the Republican convention are actually bound, not just pledged, to their candidate on the first ballot.”
And it mentioned that commie pig Pritzker, which is the second time today I heard his name in this context. If given a choice between Newsome and Pritzker, give me Gov. Hair-gel 8 days a week. And Newsome has done some not-disgusting things (like not pardoning Sirhan Sirhan), doubt the fat man from IL can say the same.
Thanks for posting!
Yeah, I don’t even want to imagine what that would look like.
I’m surprised he’s made it this long.
The party’s national committee makes the decision. George McGovern’s original running mate dropped out and the DNC confirmed McGovern’s choice of Sargent Shriver to replace him. It’s not so hard if it’s the VP candidate has to be replaced. It’s harder if it’s the presidential candidate.
Newsom?
