Usher shines at Super Bowl half-time show
BBC ^ | Feb 12 | BBC

R&B star Usher delivered a hit-heavy half-time show at Sunday's Super Bowl - with help from will.i.am, Alicia Keys, Ludacris... and a pair of roller skates.

A disclaimer shown before the performance jokingly warned viewers it may cause "singing, dancing, sweating, gyrating, and possible relationship issues". It would go on to deliver on all fronts.

Dressed in all-white and surrounded by a swarm of energetic dancers, Usher emerged on the stage at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and launched straight into one of his best-known songs, Caught Up.

It kicked off a dynamic performance which took advantage of the 45-year-old's dancing skills and sizeable back catalogue.

Before his half-time show, Usher admitted it had been "a challenge to squeeze 30 years in to 13 minutes". But the singer did an admirable job of cramming in as many of his most recognisable songs as possible.

The set features acrobats and a brass band so large there were enough members to spell out "USHER" on the grounds of the stadium as he was performing.

The singer switched effortlessly between the two apexes of his music: club anthems and sex jams.

I didn’t watch the game and have no opinion about the halftime show, but seriously ... the answer to this sort of thing is to change the channel, or maybe even turn off the tv, for the entire duration of the halftime.

The streamers know exactly when you bail on one program, and what you watch next. Skip the halftime. Go to YouTube and watch a Jordan Peterson piece of appropriate length.

In fact, watch a good YouTube video that extends ten minutes into the second half. Only go back to the game when that is over.

Monitor something else on another channel and switch to it for a quick update at every commercial break. A soccer game would be great for this — even if you don’t care about soccer — because it is continuous action game.

If 50 million people started bailing on halftime shows, the networks would get the message.

“Poor”

It was awful, absolutely horrible, no different than any other such act. Horrible “dancing,” horrible special effects, horrible music, horrible entertainment.

It’s a mystery to me how anybody can like such God-awful trash.

I think I might have seen ONE white person in that halftime garbage.

When are the marginalized and under-represented folks going to speak up?

Try some of the folk, Americana, and bluegrass mixes on Spotify. I like about one quarter of the songs enough to add them to my various playlists.

There used to be a time where halftime entertainment solely existed to give people time to go to the bathroom and/or get something to eat.

Those were good times.

That was sure an interesting looking piano. It might have fit very well on the set of Jim Kerry’s Grinch movie. I thought the music was very uninteresting and bland, and I have a very broad play list.

That was the first time I’ve heard of Usher in years. I swear it looked like he was going to have a heart attack. Last time I heard about him they said he was in so much financial trouble that he would have to return to the job that he’s named after.

I did like the guitar parts and when they let the horns take the lead but there wasn’t much of that.

Prince rules.

"Will there ever be another white halftime show?"

did you know the performers have to pay for their half time shows?. Who in the music business would you like to see at halftime?

Trace adkins is dead and would have set 1/2 of the crowd into a riot.

there arent a whole lot of white acts left in music today. except country, and country isn't cool anymore.

I was entertaining my wife by stealing and busting out all of Ushers moves.

I thought I was pretty good….Wild Turkey 101 can have that effect.

You just have make things entertaining these days…especially when they are not really much entertainment on their own.

👍🙄🪓👍😂

I was listening to the lameass singing and the lame ass music and harmonies and backup’s vocals coming from apparently invisible singers and I randomly compared it in my mind to Elvis aloha from Hawaii. Play the first three minutes of Usher last night then play the first three minutes of Aloha…night and day.

Music has the same problem as Hollywood movies. The more they force people to be alike in ways of thinking the less creativity you get.

The movies have the same problem. They rely on remakes and cartoons. Music no longer has a variety of styles.

I am mostly into Seventies music, but there was a lot in the Eighties that I liked.

I just heard a tune from “Missing Persons” the other day...bit of a blast from the past!

It seemed to me when the Nineties hit, and “grunge” became somewhat mainstream, I stopped listening to the radio. Couldn’t stand the nihilism of the lyrics or the sound of the music.

Granted, that was around the time that things like iTunes or other ways of listening to your own music on demand came into vogue, and affected my choice as well.
