Jack Sweeney: The planespotting student who angers Taylor Swift and Elon Musk
BBC ^ | Feb 11 | BBC

Posted on 02/11/2024 7:34:19 AM PST by RandFan

A university student from Florida has made a habit of getting under the skin of some of the world's richest and most powerful people. How? By telling the rest of us where their private planes are - and how much carbon they emit.

Jack Sweeney would like to clarify a few details. For one thing, he thinks Taylor Swift has some good tunes.

However, he believes - despite the threat of legal action - that anybody should be able to see where her private jet is headed, and how often it flies.

"I like to be fair," he told the BBC in an email. "I try to share everyone's info no matter who it is."

But it is specifically information about the locations of private planes of the rich and powerful - posted to his social media accounts - that has repeatedly made the 21-year-old the subject of news stories and legal threats.

Mr Sweeney is the son of an airline maintenance operations controller and a teacher, and grew up in the suburbs of Orlando. He says he has always had an interest in aviation and technology, and particularly in Elon Musk's SpaceX and Tesla companies.

Those interests gradually led him to develop a plane tracking website, TheAirTraffic.com, and social media accounts which track the aircraft of celebrities, politicians, tycoons and Russian oligarchs.

taylor’s private chartered jet from Japan (and is the NFL paying for it) not only had mechanics on hand for The FootBall Era jet but also had a backup jet called Backup Quarterback available in Japan.

I saw one group say that NFL shouldnt pay since Swift would show up anyway...but I suspect they have made a lot of exceptions for Swift.

His data has been used in studies showing the huge carbon footprint of Ms Swift and her entourage. The singer says she has bought enough carbon offsets to cancel out emissions from her latest tour twice over.

Pope Al Gore of the Church of Global Warming is making millions selling Indulgences to the wealthy Climate Catastrophist faithful.

Darn good question. I’m afraid her 15 minutes of fame is going to be like streisand though and go on for a very long time.

“The letter was an attempt to bully Jack into doing something that legally he doesn’t have to do,” he said. “Unfortunately folks with power and money often do this.

“He’s not doing anything unlawful.”

The lawyer making these threats should be Indicted, Arrested, Prosecuted and JAILED for Felony Extortion for his Terrorist Threats directed at an individual for disseminating PUBLIC INFORMATION which is 100% LEGAL.

If you want to use public airspace and public airports that require ADSB, then deal with being tracked. Sweeney is just making it easier to do it but the capability is always there.

On commercial flights with Wi-Fi, I use ADSB Exchange or his TheAirTraffic on my tablet. It’s better than the you-are-here map they sometimes have and like being your own navigator with your own radar.

Swift and Kelce's relationship is an arranged, contracted relationship, done for PR and profit. And yes, the NFL is involved.

The biggest "stars" all hire well-connected, ex-FBI, MI5, CIA etc... staff to organize their security. And if there's one thing these deep-state government types absolutely hate, its open and public information, particularly in their area of operation

Highlighting the hypocrisy of woke celebs who fly private is ok. Highlighting their carbon footprints is ok. In that vein, Al Gore was a godsend to our side; the froth-at-the-mouth climate apocalypse ranter had a personal carbon footprint bigger that many sub-Saharan African countries, and our side made full use of that.

Providing real time information on travel and whereabouts is NOT ok. Yes, there are celebs who call out the paparazzi and stage pap walks for cheap PR; that’s fair game. But the publicity hounds are outnumbered 100-1 by actors — the vast majority of whom do NOT make a lot of money and who are always scratching for their next role — trying to live reasonably normal lives offscreen.

Part of the toxicity of celeb culture is driven by intrusive fan behavior, which tends to drive the actor types into secure bubbles and increases their isolation. The same thing happens to political people.

I’ve lived in DC a long time. I’ve always lived on Capitol Hill, which used to be an affordable, somewhat dicey middle class neighborhood surrounded by some pretty rough areas. The gentrification miracle has changed all that, but I can walk you around the corner and show you a U.S. Senator’s very small house — it would sell for under $100,000 in small towns across America — that I can remember, not very many years ago, as a boarded up shell. We ain’t taking lifestyles of the rich and famous here.

When I see political people out of uniform trying to do real world things without any fuss, my rule has always been to leave them alone. I see them from time to time at Safeway. I’ve seen a couple at local youth soccer games, on the sidelines watching their kids. I see them frequently at restaurants, and since I don’t often go to expensive restaurants, I’m talking about our local beer ‘n burger or Chinese restaurants. I will respect their privacy.

The same courtesy should be extended to movie and other entertainment celebrities. If they are playing a situation for publicity, they’re fair game. But they should be able to go to the grocery store, go out on a casual date, or get on an airplane without getting mobbed. I feel sorry for the ones who have been driven to surrounding themselves with bodyguards and handlers. That’s done for protection, and at some point, the need becomes real.
