Why you should test your home for this radioactive gas, officials say

ALBANY, N.Y. (WTEN) — Officials are urging homeowners to test for radon, a natural radioactive gas that can lead to health risks if left unchecked.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, studies have shown that radon is a carcinogen that can lead to lung cancer

“Radon is known as a silent killer because you can’t see, taste, or smell it in the home, but the good news is there’s an easy way to test for it,” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. “Testing for radon should be done in the home, as well as in businesses, schools, and other buildings, so when radon is detected steps can be taken to mitigate exposure to this serious health risk.”

Ezekiel, you shine so bright. I don’t care about your religion or your politics. You are a star. You are a myriad-minded genius and I very much hope you will become a media superstar. Making media superstars is my business. It’s beneath the skin, it’s what I majored in. It’s what I do.

Thanks. I live in a Zone 2 area and 2 tests from when I sold a house came back as lower than the detectable limit. That house was built in the 1870s.

I dealt with it a lot when I was in real estate. It’s like playing darts in the dark. I read that the reason the govt decided to worry about radon was that 20,000 people a year die of lung cancer who didn’t smoke and they don’t know why. So, they blamed radon. After decades of radon mitigation, I don’t think the number has changed. USA standard is 7 PPH, Canada is 10. Why the difference? Because at 7 most of Canada wouldn’t be habitable. Maybe some Canada peeps can reveal more or correct me, that was the talk at the time. If you don’t have a basement, it’s not very relevant in my opinion. That’s where the high readings come from. Wells are the most common source of the really bad readings, I’ve seen high 30’s. Comes right through your shower and into your face. Was not an issue for over 100 years. You can read 2 pch anywhere. 4 walls, you go to four. Seven is death, 6 is fine. Based on what? Nothing.

These days, you’re in more danger of being gassed by your government.

In my area almost everyone has a basement everyone’s situation is different. It is pretty inexpensive to check out.

Thanks for posting. Radon is on my list of things I need to check. I keep forgetting about it.

My parents grew up with coal furnaces being used in their houses, said it was the best heater ever they said, both lived into their 80's.

If you’re in the Appalachians or their foothills, you should. My house in rural Maryland had a lot of radon in it.

I think this emergency requires the EPA to empty out their offices nationwide and hit the streets with testing kits. They should require all EPA employees to place 100 test kits in the taxpayers houses each day until all houses are protected. This is a crisis greater than Climate Change and requires emergency action by the EPA.

More people died at Waco at the hand of the Fedgov than radon in recorded history.

One of my neighbors with a basement (I do not have a basement, just a crawl space), found she had a high radon level.

In my case I am not care because I have a thick sheet of plastic over the ground underneath my house (why it is there) and the vents for the crawl space do a thorough job of keeping that area ventilated. Basically that is the standard protocol for radon. Ipso facto I do not have a radon problem.

The entire radon lethality myth is based upon a single study that is basically a backwards math analysis of excess deaths and blames them on radon. I’m not saying it can’t be dangerous, but the number they quote all the time is pure conjecture
