DES MOINES — A former congressional candidate from Mississippi who admitted to destroying a statue that was part of a display at the Iowa Capitol by The Satanic Temple Iowa has been charged with a hate crime.

Michael Cassidy, 36, from Lauderdale, Mississippi, initially was charged in December with fourth-degree criminal mischief, a serious misdemeanor. The charge carried a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $2,560 fine.

Cassidy, a Christian and former military officer, said in an interview with The Republic Sentinel that he tore down and beheaded a statue of Baphomet, a ram-headed figure often used to represent Satan, that was part of an altar erected inside the Capitol.

Putting up the satanic display, intended to insult christianity, is itself a hate crime.

Then tearing down a Columbus statue should also be a hate crime.
Columbus was Spanish, therefore a protected class.

“Putting up the satanic display, intended to insult christianity, is itself a hate crime.”

Bingo.

I SO yearn for the old, sane, common-culture USA. It’s never coming back, unfortunately.

Beat me tro it.

And how about all of us old Southerners who are upset about the destruction of our history?

Was that not a hate crime?

“Hate” is not a crime. Especially if you hate the things that God hates.

"Columbus was Spanish, therefore a protected class."

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator from the Republic of Genoa who was financed by the Spanish to investigate what lay to the West (hopefully a direct route to the Orient).

How would the Church of Satan and its lawyers react to a statue of Satan being defeated? St. Michael statues are quite common.
