Thom McAn Shoes – What Happened?

Ward Melville, in collaboration with J. Franklin McElwain, a shoe manufacturer from New Hampshire, founded the Thom McAn brand. The name drew inspiration from Scottish golfer Thomas McCann. The inaugural retail store opened its doors in New York in 1922, offering a selection of uncomplicated styles at a fixed, affordable price. Within five years, the brand expanded to 300 stores, and by 1939, it had a staggering 650 stores.

You may have to go to Michigan to find one. I see that Michigan has 51 of the 61 Bob’s Big Boys that still exist.

Apparently only 3 remain in Southern California. There once were 140 here in SoCal. The vast demographic change here may have doomed them, like it has many American things.

Marriot bought the chain at one point. Hot Shoppes was a Marriot created chain so they should have had the skills to run Big Boy.
