Yep, about the last thing you want to hear on a ship at sea is NOTHING.

That said, dark and silent is still better than a great honking BOOM followed by dark, silent, and wet.

My first stateroom was next to the port side forced draft blower room. Loud but an excellent source of white noise. I even managed to sleep while we were at sea during Hurricane David in 1979.
