Nick Saban’s retiring as the University of Alabama football coach, ESPN reported Wednesday afternoon, turning a long inevitability into a stark reality and sending shockwaves throughout the college football world.
It ends arguably the greatest run in college football history where the once famously-nomadic Saban finally planted roots and rebuilt a decaying empire.
By reviving a struggling Crimson Tide program — winning 80.6% of his games and seven national titles — Saban placed his name among the all-time greats. That includes Paul “Bear” Bryant, the Alabama coach from six whose national title mark Saban passed in 2020.

Tar baby ain’t say nuffin’.
Right time to retire. He’s starting to lose his edge.
Gerry Faust still available?
“winning 80.6% of his games and seven national titles”
Well done Nick.
He didn’t want to cheat to keep up with Hairball
Now that the SEC is ending.
“...Now that the SEC is ending...”
??????????????????
There is no denying his accomplishments in the college game. He’s going to be a very difficult act to follow. I wonder if there is an underlying health issue.
What’s the suicide rate in Birmingham?
End of an era. Right up there with Bear’s Checkered Hat.
Now what happens to the Tide?
I have to say, as an Alabamian, at least I had one thing to be proud of, especially before I retired and was working around the country.
He never settled for half a loaf.
How is the SEC ending??? Please tell us....
I’m from Tennessee, but I still love this joke...
Tennessee fan and Auburn fan sitting in a bar getting plastered...
Tennessee fan asked Auburn fan, “What’s that AUBURN mean on you sweatshirt??”
He answers, “Alabama Usually Beats Us Red Necks...”
Then Auburn fan asks, “What that UT on your shirt??”
Tennessee fan sadly replies, “Us Too”...
Expanding to 16 teams and realigning old rivalries. No more West and East divisions.
It will ruin the conference IMO.
Great coach, the greatest IMO.
But right time to leave.
An assistant at Ohio State said recruits were asking $5,000 (NIL money) to take an official visit. NCAA has set up the transfer portal with an unlimited number of transfers for a player.
Traditional college football is dead.
Big changes coming to college football to be sure.
I noticed that Saban seemed much more tranquil this year, as if he knew it was his last rodeo.
Greatest coach of all time!
Alabama has had the fortune of having the two greatest coaches of all time — Nick Saban and Bear Bryant.
Roll Time Roll!!!
And now the bidding war between the networks to see who gets him as an analyst.
