So you trust government greed over industry greed for your family’s healthcare needs?
I don’t trust either. They are both trash.
The global drug market isn’t a “free market”. Most foreign governments fix prices on drugs, which is what Biden wants to do.
The same for wages, among other things, for that matter. Gov’t needs to keep its long nose out of other peoples business that it isn’t constitutionally authorized to regulate in any fashion.
Trump had it right when he signed his EO to allow the drug companies to sell their products freely, but they couldn’t use the American consumer to subsidize the world.
Yeah - but it’s complicated....
Most other nations (some form of socialized medicine) dictate prescription drug prices. This means the US public pays for a LARGE chunk of drug development costs for the world. How is that fair to US patients?
Also, the corruption of drug companies bribing politicians has resulted in unprecedented allowances for “renewing” or “refreshing” drug patents that use to be ineligible for such renewal. When such things as insulin... are allowed to be protected again, guaranteeing a free reign to charge exorbitant profit margins when the patent should have expired... there is something wrong.
If you think free market will fix health care or pharma you are higher thank a kite.
This sort of crap is fed to the naive.
Canadas price of insulin has nothing to do with the us companies gouging and killing people.
The global drug market isn’t a “free market”.
The global drug market isn’t a “free market”.
The global drug market isn’t a “free market”.
The global drug market isn’t a “free market”.
Doesn’t matter if it is or it isn’t.
This naïveté talking point is just ludicrous.
Insulin didn’t go from a cheap and readily available drug because Canada capped prices it went there because the US government is owned by pharma… free market economics allowed that
Stop parroting talking points and wake the hell up.
… the US government is owned by pharma …
You’ve got that exactly backward.
Oh no I don’t. The FDA is completely captive to the pharma industry.
You think otherwise you are living in a dream world
Many people want the government to protect the consumer. A much more urgent problem is to protect the consumer from the government.
- Milton Friedman
Sigh.
I am a huge fan of Milton, and am not anti markets, but to try to argue the markets in all cases are going to fix problems is to deny reality.
The Monopoly is the end game of free markets... and even Milton recognized this and the damage they do to things, though those that often quote him ignore this.
Free Markets create monopolies, that are just as destructive as any regulatory or government monopoly.
Pharma is a regulated industry, but regulation didn’t create the monopolies... FDA is completely captive to the Pharma Industry... Free Market players have created the monopolies and collusion in the drug markets... It is beyond ignorant to make the arugment that free markets will fix drug prices... they won’t.
Insulin has been cheap and plentiful since the 50s... A few. years back the free market created a virtual monopoly on this drug and drove its prices through the rough simply for greed... people died, literally died, because they could not afford this cheap and plentiful drug because of what the “free marketers” did.
People advocating that free market will in and of itself solve all woes are rankly just idiological parrots, spewing garbage with little thought or understanding.
Markets are good, but they are not the cure all, nor will they be, particularly in health care and pharma.
If they FDA went away tomorrow, it would not have prevented what happened with Shkreli and others.
Blind belief that the market will fix all woas on its own is nonsensical.
Unfettered market forces lead to monopolies... this nation has seen the damage monopolies do, and should have learned the lessons from them.. but sadly there are still fools running around refusing to accept those lessons.
Internet search: “why are drug prices higher in the US?”
Why are prices so high in the US?
Unlike other nations, the US doesn’t directly regulate medicine prices. In Europe, the second-largest pharmaceutical market after the US, governments negotiate directly with drugmakers to limit what their state-funded health systems pay. The UK’s National Health Service has refused to pay for some cancer drugs widely used in the US on the grounds that they don’t offer value for money. In the US, drug companies have more or less been able to set whatever price the market will bear.
I am not sure what you are trying to prove with this citation. Basically it proves what I have stated, the private market will not drive down prices, it has zero incentive to.
The idea that the market will drive down drug prices is utter nonsense. The FDA is a captive agency.. What Shrkreli did (and others) is exactly what the open market does... Creates monopolies and gouges.
Those that think the free market will fix health care or drug prices have absolutely zero understanding of either industry.
This dialogue started with “industry greed” driving US drug prices.
The rabbit hole is already too deep.
