Today, despite everything, despite all the challenges, there is long-awaited good news. We managed to free over 200 of our people from Russian captivity. Warriors and – very importantly – civilians. We remember all Ukrainians held in Russian captivity. There was a long pause in the exchanges, but there was no pause in the negotiations regarding the exchanges. We seize every opportunity, try all mediation options. At every international meeting that can help the cause, we raise the issue of returning our captives. And we will continue this work to return our people… All our people.
Now I am glad that we managed to unblock the exchange. We brought home warriors of the Armed Forces and the National Guard, border guards and Navy servicemen. Most of them are soldiers and sergeants. But there are also officers. It is a really good day for Ukraine. Some of these warriors are defenders of Mariupol and Azovstal. Some of those freed today were not even initially known to be in captivity. They were considered missing. It is very important to keep hope alive.
I thank the entire team that has worked and is working for the exchanges to continue! Budanov, Yermak, Usov, Malyuk, Klymenko. And of course, I thank each of our warriors on the front line who take the occupiers prisoner and replenish our exchange fund. The more Russians we take prisoner, the more effective the negotiations on exchanges will be.

As part of the President’s initiative to provide housing for the servicemen – Heroes of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented apartment certificates to the Heroes of Ukraine and the family members of the fallen warriors upon whom this title was conferred posthumously.
The ceremony took place at the Mariyinsky Palace in Kyiv.
“In a free Kyiv, in the Mariyinsky Palace, we continue our tradition of honoring and appreciating the warriors of Ukraine. Those who defend Ukraine on land, in the sky, and in our Ukrainian Black Sea. Our heroes, who have proved that Ukrainians, through their extraordinary deeds and strength, are capable of steering history in the right direction. Ukraine would not have withstood if it had not been for people like you, our Heroes, if it had not been for such courage of the Ukrainian people,” the President said, addressing the attendees.
The Head of State emphasized that Ukrainians know how to overcome circumstances, and our warriors have the courage to defeat Russia’s viciousness.
“And we will surely defeat it. Despite all Russia’s missile attacks, despite any intentions of the enemy, we will definitely defend our country. And may an independent and strong Ukraine always be grateful to everyone who fought for it, everyone who worked for it, everyone who can say that Ukrainian life is their achievement, their result,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The attendees observed a moment of silence in memory of all Ukrainian warriors, all Ukrainian citizens who gave their lives for the preservation of the state.
The President presented certificates for apartments to heroic warriors from the Armed Forces of Ukraine: Captain Vasyl Boyechko, Captain Illia Verhun, Senior Lieutenant Oleksandr Kovalenko, Lieutenant Colonel Andriy Kruhlov, Colonel Mykola Palas, Senior Sergeant Andriy Vodopyanchuk, Lieutenant Colonel Oleh Dmytruk, Lieutenant Colonel Oleksandr Yurkovskyi, as well as Staff Sergeant of the National Guard Oleksandr Kostenko, Senior Sergeant of the National Guard Dmytro Finashyn, Staff Sergeant of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine Dmytro Kushnir, Soldier of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine Ivan Kyshenko and Master Sergeant of the Civil Protection Service of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine Andriy Koshovets.
During the ceremony, Hero of Ukraine Dmytro Kushnir handed over a military chevron to the President.

Day 679 of the Russian full-scale military aggression against Ukraine continues.
The Russian federation continues to wage a war of aggression. Despite significant losses, the adversary does not abandon its plans for the complete occupation of Ukraine. The enemy continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, conducts strikes, and attacks both military and civilian targets. The enemy is actively using tactical aircraft and FPV quadcopters, conducting assault operations with the support of armored vehicles.
During the day of January 3, there were 47x combat engagements. The enemy launched a total of 6x missile, 42x air strikes, carried out 18x MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the Russian terrorist attacks have wounded civilians. Residential buildings, other civilian and industrial infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.
The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult.
VOLYN and POLISSYA AXIS: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.
SIVERSHCHYNA and SLOBOZHANSHCHYNA AXIS: the adversary maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. The invaders launched air strikes in the vicinities of Morokhovets and Kolodyazne (Kharkiv oblast). More than 20x settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Tymonovychi, Arkhypivka, Leonivka, Kostobobriv, Hremyach (Chernihiv oblast), Marchykhyna Buda, Volfyne, Kostyantynivka, Myropillya, Popivka (Sumy oblast), Alisivka, Lyptsi, Lukyantsi, Starytsya, Zybyne, Odradne (Kharkiv oblast).
KUPYANSK AXIS: the adversary conducted no offensives. The invaders launched air strikes in the vicinities of Petropavlivka, Kucherivka, Podoly, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast) and Novojehorivka (Luhansk oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).
LYMAN AXIS: the occupiers did not conduct any offensive (assault) operations. The adversary launched air strikes in the vicinity of Serebryanske forestry (Luhansk oblast), Terny, Spirne (Donetsk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Torske, Serebryanka, Verkhnokamyanske, Spirne, Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast).
BAKHMUT AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 4x attacks near Bohdanivka and Andriivka (Donetsk oblast). The enemy made unsuccessful attempts to improve its tactical position in that area. The invaders launched an air strike in the vicinity of Pivnichne settlement (Donetsk oblast). More than 10x settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Mykolaivka, Klishchiivka, Andriivka, New York (Donetsk oblast).
AVDIIVKA AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 9x enemy attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Avdiivka, and 19x more attacks in the vicinities of Sjeverne, Pervomaiske and Nevelske (Donetsk oblast). With the air support, the occupiers made unsuccessful attempts to improve their tactical position in that area. The adversary launched an air strike near Oleksandropil (Donetsk oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Keramik, Novokalynove, Berdychi, Semenivka, Avdiivka, Nevelske (Donetsk oblast).
MARYINKA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinities of Heorhiivka and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast), where the adversary, with air support, made 11x attempts to improve their tactical situation. Oleksandropil, Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Pobjeda, Novomykhailivka, Yelyzavetivka, Katerynivka were under artillery and mortar fire of the occupiers.
SHAKHTARSKE AXIS: the adversary did not conduct any offensive (assault) operations. Around 10x settlements, including Vodyane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Blahodatne, Staromaiorske (Donetsk oblast), came under artillery and mortar fire.
ZAPORIZHZHIA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 1x enemy attack near Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). The attack was as an unsuccessful attempt to regain lost ground in that area. Enemy air strikes hit Novodarivka (Zaporizhzhia oblast). More than 15x settlements, including Levadne, Hulyaipole, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Mali Shcherbaky, Pyatykhatky (Zaporizhzhia oblast), suffered from enemy artillery and mortar fire.
ODES operational-strategic group, KHERSON AXIS: the adversary fired artillery at Tomaryne, Novotyahynka, Sadove, Kherson, Chornobaivka and Kizomys (Kherson oblast).
The enemy does not abandon its intention to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their bridgehead on the left bank of the Dnipro River. Thus, during the day of January 3, the occupiers made 8x failed assaults. However, the Ukrainian troops continue to hold their positions and inflict significant losses on the enemy.
During day of January 3, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 12x concentrations of enemy troops.
The Ukrainian missile troops hit 3x anti-aircraft missile systems, 3x artillery systems, 1x electronic warfare station and 1x command post of the russian invaders.

Russians imitated exchanges for captured Ukrainian soldier and said he was abandoned by Ukraine – Lubinets

One of the soldiers, who was released today as part of a prisoner exchange, reported moral abuse by the Russian Federation. He was assured that Ukraine had allegedly abandoned him.
This is reported by Censor.NET with reference to the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets on the air of the national telethon.
The ombudsman was asked how the Ukrainians who returned home were feeling. Lubinets said that physically they are all “very bad”, the soldiers are exhausted and thin.
When asked about their morale, he said: “I will say frankly: all the guys and girls are morally strong and brave, and when they realized that they really came back to Ukraine, they said that they were strong and no one broke them.”
Lubinets told a story that, according to him, shows another case of mockery of Ukrainians in favor of propaganda.
“Today I was told by a guy that he was taken out several times allegedly for an exchange, and then returned and told that Ukraine had abandoned him. All this time, in fact, the Russian side has never agreed to an exchange. I record this as physical and psychological torture of a person,” he said.
Today, on January 3, the largest exchange of prisoners of war took place, during which Ukraine was able to return 230 soldiers and civilians.

Ukraine and Russia have announced the largest exchange of prisoners since the start of the war, involving the return of more than 200 soldiers from each side in a deal mediated by the United Arab Emirates. Russia and Ukraine have periodically exchanged groups of prisoners during the course of the war, which is now in its 22nd month, but the swaps have become less frequent and the last took place in early August.

No electricity deficit, renewable energy generation was limited to balance the power system
POWER GENERATION
No electricity deficit has been recorded and is not expected for the current day.
Yesterday in the morning, to balance the power in the energy system, the generation from renewable energy sources was reduced.
The electricity generated in Ukraine is sufficient to meet the needs of consumers.
A CHPP unit was put out for emergency repairs, and 4 thermal generation units came back online from short-term emergency repairs. There are 2 TPP units in reserve that will be used if necessary.
The situation is under control. No blackout schedules are applied.
CONSEQUENCES OF SHELLING
As a result of massive shelling on 2 January, high-voltage lines and substations in Kyiv region were cut off, and there were temporary disruptions in the operation of hydroelectric power plants. As a result, households in Kyiv and the region were cut off from electricity, but all of them have been reconnected.
In Mykolaiv region, an explosion near a substation disconnected a 150 kV overhead line, which cut off power to household consumers, all of whom were quickly reconnected. At the same time, the output of 6 wind farms was reduced, and the stations resumed operation in the evening.
During the artillery shelling of a 110 kV overhead line in Donetsk region, a TPP unit was disconnected, and household consumers lost power. Within an hour, all customers were reconnected using backup power.

This revenue stream has been devastated by the Sanctions and Pipeline Gas Sales to Europe in 2023 dell by a further 56%. Russia is unable to sell this gas to other countries as it does not have any additional pipelines nor does it have the ability to convert the gas into LGN. In 2024, Ukraine will not only restore its power generation capacity, but also increase it. This was stated by Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko in an interview with the national telethon.
The head of the Ministry of Energy recalled that about 50% of the Ukrainian power system facilities were damaged or occupied by russian terrorists.
“To date, more than 2 GW of power system capacity has been restored. This applies to the facilities that were severely damaged last winter,” said German Galushchenko.
The Minister said that this capacity was of great importance to the power system and stressed the importance of timely payment for electricity consumed by citizens.
“Citizens have been of great help in restoring the power system. The tariff for households was changed and it is partly thanks to these funds paid by consumers that we have managed to recover,” the Minister said.
He said that the relevant measures had allowed to accumulate about UAH 16-18 billion, which was used, among other things, to carry out a repair campaign at the facilities of the state power generation companies Ukrhydroenergo and Energoatom.
German Galushchenko stressed that there were no plans to increase household tariffs until the end of the 2023/24 heating season.
The Minister also noted that in 2024, decentralisation, an increase in the share of gas turbine and gas piston plants, solar and wind generation would be an important tool for increasing power generation capacity. Relevant measures are already underway and will be accelerated in 2024.

As the second anniversary of the Ukraine conflict looms, the female relatives of Russia’s mobilized men are becoming more and more outspoken in calling for their loved ones to come home, with their pickets and impassioned appeals gaining traction on social media.
Their activism, despite being largely ignored by state media, remains a sensitive issue for the Kremlin, which is keen to project an image of national unity around President Vladimir Putin ahead of his inevitable re-election in a vote this March.
