I remember watching the Smother Brother's Comedy Hour when I was a kid.

RIP Tom.

Tommy Smothers had a unique style of humor that I enjoyed very much. RIP Tommy.

their program succeeded by attracting younger, hipper, more rebellious viewers

They were among the first Leftist entertainers spewing opinion on TV.

Smothers Brothers introducing a fantastic performance by Glen Campbell of “Wichita Lineman” back in 1968:

I saw their act live in San Diego around 1985. Tommy was such a natural comedian. R.I.P.

Hated his politics but respected his talent.
Always thought he was the younger of the two…

I remember the Smothers brothers. I don’t remember them being controversial and by todays standards their comedy would be considered mild by comparison.

We weren’t allowed to watch that show - back in those days there was one TV and we watched whatever the grown-ups wanted.

The times I did manage to sneak a few episodes, I loved it.

RIP

I remember in 1968 when the Beatles played “Hey Jude” live on their show.

It was pretty cool.

Musically they were talented as well. Growing up our entire family loved watching them. Tommy had a real gift for comedy.

They had an amusing version of Streets of Laredo:

It’s amazing how most of US stars and entertainers just pulled the company line, and said nothing, while our boys were dying in a most stupid MIC war in Vietnam.

I do not forgive them for that.

...who blazed the trail followed today by satirists such as Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Samantha Bee

Except the Smothers Brothers were funny and talented.

I produced a stage play with Tommy Smothers back in 2012. He was a fun guy to hang out with, except when some roses were delivered to the theater for Tommy. When I handed the box to him, he asked me who they were from. Trying to be cute, I said “probably Rush Limbaugh”. My comment triggered him into a 10 minute tirade against conservatives. I’ve never wanted to take back something I said so badly.

Rest in peace, Tommy. Prayers to Marcy.
