On the Western calendar St. Stephens' Day is observed on the Second Day of Christmas.
St. Stephen was one of the original seven Deacons appointed and ordained in the Acts of the Apostles; specifically to oversee the distribution to the poor.
This association with aid to those in need is strongly alluded to in the Carol "Good King Wenceslaus".
On St. Stephen's Day is was customary for the poor, servant classes to go from house to house, particularly those of their customers to beg alms or treats. They carried boxes in which to place their bounty, hence the name "Boxing Day".
