Although most in the West consider Hamas, which brutally massacred some 1,400 Israelis on October 7, 2023, to be anything from a terrorist to a nationalist movement, the group sees itself first and foremost as a religious—namely, Islamic—movement, dedicated to enforcing the draconian dictates of Muslim law (sharia), including through jihad.
“Hamas” means “zeal” in Arabic and is an Arabic acronym from harakat al-muqawamah al-islamiyyah (the Islamic Resistance Movement). The group is primarily concentrated in the Gaza Strip.
Created primarily by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in 1987 as an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas has the stated goal of replacing the entire state of Israel with a Muslim state governed by sharia. Jihad and Islamist indoctrination are its two principal means of instituting this new state.
Although its official membership is around 20,000, more than 200,000—5.26 percent of the then total population of the Palestinian Territories—attended the funeral procession for Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in 2004, suggesting that its local sympathizers are 10 times its official number.
In addition to its immediate goals, Hamas’ founding charter also illustrates the organization’s commitment to Islamic principles in general. The slogan—“Allah is its goal [theocratic rule], the Prophet its model [importance of sunna], the Koran its Constitution [sharia], Jihad [terrorism] its path, and death [suicide-bombings] in the cause of Allah its most sublime belief” —fully demonstrates its Islamic, as opposed to territorial or nationalistic, motivations.
Though most Hamas members are Palestinian Sunni Arabs, the charter “welcomes all Muslims who share its beliefs and thinking, commit themselves to its course of action, keep its secrets and aspire to join its ranks in order to carry out their duty.”

Yes.
Is it “Extreme” by Muslim Standards?
Not when Muslims as Muslims become a majority.
Radical Muslims (like Hamas) want to kill infidels.
Moderate Muslims want the radical Muslims to kill infidels.
So the answer to the question is unfortunately, yes.
“Hamas” means “zeal” in Arabic
I thought it meant “submission”
Sorry, I thought they meant Islam, not Hamas.
Christians who diligently follow the teachings of Jesus become more peaceful.
Muslims who diligently follow the teachings of Muhammad become more violent.
All of islam is extreme if followers adhere to its rules
Convert by word or sword, subjugate or destroy whoever refuses to convert
Westerners have gotten so wishy-washy they cannot conceive of absolutists willing to kill and die for their moral code. They are not simply spouting jargon
“By Muslim Standards...”
Anybody who judges anything by Muslim standards needs their head examined.
Like saying after you die, “Yeah, we’re in hell, but that part over there with Hitler is worse.”
Islam is Islam, there is no extreme.
That’s right.
Exactly.
If one studies history one will see true Islam and it’s just like Hamas.
“200,000—5.26 percent of the population of the Palestinian Territories—attended the funeral... suggesting that its local sympathizers are 10 times its official number”
No it shows 10 times the number went to the funeral, the sympathizers are 10 times that number.
Its FUNDAMENTALIST ISLAM... not “extreme” by any stretch.
The inability of the west to be honest about what the fundamental tenants of Islam are is destroying the world.
“Westerners have gotten so wishy-washy they cannot conceive of absolutists willing to kill and die for their moral code.”
Those people are Jihad Deniers.
Proxy for Islam. All advance jihad to attain the objectives of policy.
Thank you Heartlander.
I suppose we could similarly ask (a) is North Korea communist and (b) were the Salem witch trials Christian?
Fairness should apply in answering such questions. I daresay you can find extremists in any belief system willing to use force, even in ways no longer countenanced as civilized.
But, here is what I notice: there are people who will judge others harshly, such as confederates for defending slavery; and, ignore that Saladin took slaves from among the defeated. They pick sides on a political basis, instead of on the basis of what was understood to be just in that time and place.

It adheres to Allah’s Quranic instructions. It seems clear to me that their “god,” Allah, is just another name for Satan. Satan is known as the Great Deceiver, so why wouldn’t he operate under a different cover? Note, he supposedly made his presence known to Mohammad after his banishment from Heaven. What is his objective - to gain control over God’s earthly domain? How is he about doing it - through his earthly believers?
Muhammed is the “perfect man” of Islam, and Muhammed was not some scholar (he couldn’t read), nor was he a peacemaker (he violated every truce he ever made), nor was he a do-gooder (he only destroyed and never built anything). Muhammed was a murderer, a rapist, a bandit, a kidnapper, a slaver, and a terrorist. So Hamas just follows his example, which makes them “good” Muslims, not extreme ones, as far as I can tell.
Peaceful coexistence with islam isn’t possible. It’s a sick demented death cult founded by a murderous pedophile. It is wholly incompatible with Western civilization and always will be.
No “reform” of islam is possible. Anyone trying to would be instantly marked for death as an apostate.
There’s only one solution if western civilization is to survive. And that is the utter extirpation of it from the face of the earth forever by whatever means necessary.
