Agree, not common.
But it’s MY preference.
Why? It seems far more logical to me. (I’m a mathematician.) When we write numbers, we put the digits that represent the smallest amount on the right, so to me it makes sense to do the same thing with a date.
Year (largest), Month (middle), Day (smallest)
If it’s something important and/or I’m worried that it could be misinterpreted, I’ll use all 4 digits for the year and/or write the month as a 3-letter abbreviation. I usually use all 4 digits for the year as a matter of course, just because.
