The New Yorker is running a contest. What should we call our era? Some possible candidates: Terrible Twenties, the Age of Emergency, Cold War II, the Omnishambles, the Great Burning, and the Assholocene.
Try as I might, I cannot understand the last one. Regardless, it’s absolutely the case that there has been a dramatic turning of events and our lives. It’s not just national. It’s global and devastating.
I’m going with the Terrible Twenties.
Everyone seems to agree that this moniker applies, regardless of class or political leanings. You can take your pick of the symptoms: ill-health, inflation, political division, censorship, overweening state power, shabby political candidates, war, crime, homelessness, financial strain, dependency, learning loss, suicides, excess deaths, shortened lifespans, lack of trust, demographic upheaval, the purge of dissent, the threat of authoritarianism, mass incompetence, spread of crazy ideologies, lack of civility, fake science, corruption at all levels, middle class disappearance, and on and on ad infinitum.

The Great Karenocide.
The Lockdown Decade
The Panic Decade
The Stupud Decade
If fair elections occur going forward it could be called ‘The Tree of Liberty Twenties’
“The Age of Incompetence”
Folks denigrate to 80’s as the “decade of greed” but the 2020’s are certainly a “Decade of Government Greed”.
December 1963 was still for the most part not much different than the 1950s. Most of the defining events of the 1960s decade was still in the future in December of 1963. JFK had just been murdered but The Beatles hadn't even hit US radio yet and Vietnam was still a minor conflict half a world away.
Ditto for December 1973, and so on.
Agree. But I (in my early 50’s) have been diagnosed with Early Onset of Cynical Grumpy Oldman. Grin. Things could indeed change after 2024 election.
The Crazy Years works for me.

The age of dementia
The Waste
The Whoring Twenties?
Why?
The “Roaring 20s” and maybe the “Hungry [18]40s” are probably the only decades named in that way.
Yeah - I like it. Especially due to the irony that many young folks call themselves ‘Woke’.
True. The early ‘60s were like the ‘50s in many ways.
Remember how we used to hear about the ‘60s, the ‘70s, the 80s, etc. I have hardly heard anyone talk of decades since the turn of the century.
Does anyone ever talk about the ‘00s, or the ‘10s?
I remember someone talking about “American Graffiti” as being a depiction of the ‘50s, yet the events in that movie were said to have happened in 1962.
I thought that Jethro was always talking about the '00s ...
Tranny twenties so far
Tragic Twenties?
