A well designed vehicle should have crumpling and things coming off the sides, front, and back of it, while leaving the passenger compartment intact.

Ferrari's explode all the time on impact. There are endless pics of them...It's like traveling at 100 mph in a plastic cup...

That’s an example of a design where the body of the car is designed to absorb the energy of the impact to minimize the energy absorbed into the bodies of the occupants.

Of course they are dealing with the extreme example here which did save the life of the driver.
