Probably comes from the expression, “locking horns” but the writer is too dumb to get it right.

Sounds like a malaphor of "locking horns" and "butting heads".
I like to mix "rocket scientist" and "brain surgeon", as in:
"Dude, obviously you ain't no rocket surgeon!"
