Leading Democrat claims Republicans refuse 'to accept the results of the Civil War'

A leading Democrat, the new mayor of Chicago, is claiming that Republicans in America still refuse "to accept the results of the Civil War."

It is Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson who recently unleashed a rant about "right-wing extremists."

They are the ones, he charged, that are responsible for the huge problems facing the Democrat-run city.

And specifically, "It's the same Republican right-wing extremism that stormed the Capitol, it's the same right-wing extremism that refuses to accept the results of the Civil War. It's raggedy. It's disrespectful. It's mean-spirited," he charged.

Actually, History.com reports the GOP was founded in 1854 as a coalition opposing the extension of slavery into Western territories, and it fought to protect the rights of African Americans after the 1861-1864 war when Democrats were continuing their battles to keep blacks as second-class residents, much less citizens, by means including the founding of the KKK…

Thanks. I know little about that part of US history because there was a lot going on up here. We were dealing with some serious issues about the way Upper Canada was being run.

I remember when I was learning about the civil war in junior high, and they got to the part about the South attacking fort Sumter. I asked the teacher why they did it, and his response was "They were just a bunch of hot heads."

That answer never sat well with me.

It was years later when a friend of mine who was a history major told me that Lincoln deliberately provoked them in order to get a war, but it is something i've never seen in any of my history books.

But eventually I uncovered what really happened. Lincoln needed the war, but he wanted to make them look like the bad guys, so he called his fleet a "supply mission" and told everyone he was "just sending bread to Anderson."

And then he would lock up any newspaper people who said otherwise.

On a different topic, do you worry about posting or reading a message board that would likely be frowned upon by the Canadian government?

From the things i've been reading coming out of Canada, it feels as if they are moving into "thought police" territory.

England is already there.

Not really. Don’t believe everything you read; we have a lot of serious issues going on but life is pretty good here overall and the authoriities really don’t care if we gripe, as long as nobody gets violent.

The truckers weren’t violent.

Slavery wasn’t until the 13th Amendment was ratified later on.

Slavery wasn't ended until a decent bit after the 13th.

Maybe.
The 13th freed the last slaves in the northern States (I think Delaware or Vermont, and one or two others), but slaves owned by several of the Tribes were not included in this. So they weren’t freed until treaties later. Off the top of my head I think the Creek were the last ones, a good 6-8 months after the 13th hit.
