In response to this and certain modern RC teaching, there arose various sects of "TradCaths," called those "Protestant" by some, since in polemics and practice they hold that what the modern living magisterium teaches is only valid and authoritative if it is consistent with their own TradCath judgment of conformity with past (which period they variously interpret) church teaching.
Which they should, but with past church teaching being that of the only wholly inspired substantive authoritative record of what the NT church believed (which is Scripture, in particular Acts through Revelation, which best shows how the NT church understood the gospels) in which distinctive RC teachings are not manifest.
