(Vanity Question) Salvation Army-Yay or Nay?
11/21/23 | Hoagy62

Got a question for my fellow FReepers.

I saw a social media post from an uber-liberal I know. In it, she made mention that the Salvation Army kettle drive was under way. She reminded her friends that they should NOT give anything to the SA because they were ant-LGBTQ+.

Now, I seem to recall that (I think it was two or maybe three years ago) there was huge hue and cry from FR that we should not give to the SA bell ringers because the SA was PRO-LGBTQ+, according to some handout to the bell-ringing volunteers.

As for me, there are many other good charities to give my money to, but I think it's rather strange that both sides are saying the SA is bad for exactly the opposite reasons.

Gotta admit...it's kinda confusing. Which is it?

I have a friend who works for them and has for many years after they helped straighten him out from his alcohol addiction.

I know another senior who they helped when he was homeless.

I prefer to look at the good they have done for many rather than unsubstantiated internet claims of negativity,.

My local Salvation Army group seems to be pretty traditional. I don’t see or hear any of the woke nonsense. I still find it a good place to donate things to. They’re a real charity, not like all the Goodwill organizations that pay their CEOs hundreds of thousands of dollars a year and only 10% of their profits go to charity.

The Salvation Army put out a training manual teaching their volunteers how to persuade donors to apologize for being white.

They dumped the manual after donations dried up.

If it makes you feel good, give them a little bit of money.

I personally prefer to contact my local SHARE organization/outlet to find out what they need at their pantry.
They usually have a list like:
Adult Diapers
Peanut Butter
Granola Bars
Marinara Sauce
Cereal
Light Bulbs

Then I go shopping and deliver it to their pantry. I NEVER give them cash or check. Just food stuffs and occasionally they have a clothing drive. Things like winter coats, hats, boots.

Unsubstantiated?

They're outright anti-white racists as per their own publications. They want people to apologize for being white - you know, the way God made them.

The Salvation Army is un-apologetically structurally racist against white people, both in terms of the charity it does and those it employs.

It also propagates anti-white propaganda.

It’s the KKK of a different color. No thanks.

I cant speak for the national organization. But here in my small town and still ring the bell. All money raised stays in the community.

Maybe you could post a link to one or two of those publications. You know, just to support your claim.

Which is exactly why I give to the Salvation Army.

I tend to give to local charities, not that I know where every penny of those donations go, I like the idea of taking care of my local area rather than the entire world.

For many years I made sizable donations to the Salvation Army, but I stopped cold when all that BS came out a few years back. And I used to put money in every kettle I passed.

Like another poster wrote, they are dead to me.

Hot Tabasco, those “unsubstantiated claims” are substantiated. I used to vigorously support them but no more.

The Salvation Army lost this long-term donor when they went woke, decided to support the mostly peaceful BLM riots, and insisted that its white donors should “lament, repent and apologize for biases or racist ideologies held”.

My wife and I keep it simple. If the bell ringer says Merry Christmas, we donate.

During my time in the military I found the SA to be much better than the red cross in helping the troops.
