I like to throw out everything Stephen Hawking ever said, especially his atheistic ramblings, since he was one of the biggest SUCKERS for the false interpretation.
My son and I watch Science Channel's 'How the Universe Works' regularly. They present their theories with great confidence - until they come to a bridge that they cannot cross; then they admit that they don't know. What they don't know opens doubts about their theories but they carefully compartmentalize such questions.
The cosmos just surpasses scientific understanding. I enjoy their research and revelations - like gravity waves, but I keep a reserved judgement on most of it. ❓ 🤔
Science admits that it relies on 'empirical' data - which is based upon measures determined by an extension of the five senses. All well and good but the senses are provably filled with flaws. After all, everything that is manifest is made from things which do not appear.
Their calculations of distances in light years is, as you say, dependent on interpretations of the red shift phenomenon. I remain a convicted skeptic. 😌
