Jury Duty - What Does It Mean Now?
me | now | me

Posted on 11/06/2023 7:34:54 PM PST by ggrrrrr23456

I served on jury duty today.

The prosecutor asked the question, "Does anyone not want to be here for jury duty today?"\

I raised my hand.

I then went on record saying that my view of the process had been clouded by what I consider to be an abuse and politicization of the judicial system in NY, GA, and Washington D.C.

The judge, who I don't doubt is an honorable chap doing his duty, gave a speech about the importance of jury duty, how it was a responsibility and privilege that had been fought for by our Founding Fathers through blood, sweat and tears.

25 years ago, that would have made sense. But now, not so much.

Is anyone else facing the same challenge with their jury duty service?

I was in a jury pool for drunk driver. The defense attorney tried to claim the equipment used to measure alcohol in the breath was inaccurate. I countered that I had used similar equipment in college chemistry classes and it was orders of magnitude more accurate than you are claiming. Anything else? Sure. I have 3 classmates killed by drunk drivers. Anything else? Sure. I have been the household bartender since age 5. Anymore? I'm LDS and I don't drink. My wife is a dispatcher for the sheriff's dept.

That cleared the room. They brought in a fresh set of jurors untainted by my answers to the defense attorney.

The drunk driver was convicted. He blew 0.24 BAC. He was bouncing off both sides of the I-5 southbound as it passes through downtown San Diego. The only reason there wasn't more carnage is that it occurred after 2 AM when the bars close in San Diego.

I did serve on a jury a couple years later. It was a teen girl injured by bricks blown off a roof in high winds blowing against plastic sheets. The plaintiff's attorney made outlandish claims that his client was prevented from pursuing a career as an Olympic skier. The building management was partly culpable in not calling the construction company to secure the plastic sheets in the wind. In the end, we found the defendant liable for medical treatment for acute injuries caused by the bricks and ongoing rental of TENS devices to mitigate some muscle pain while the injuries healed. Both plaintiff and defense were satisfied with the verdict and award.

I’ve got jury duty next week. First time I’ll be serving in Maryland. My previous jury duty was in NYC, and we convicted both times. I sort of hope I’m not selected, as my previous experience with libtard Maryland courts was disgusting. And a friend was recently brought to court on charges brought by a vindictive woman who was ticked off because he backed out of buying her house. Fortunately for him, he got off very lightly, but it still had a terrible effect on his self esteem.

I’ve been pulled for jury duty twice. Spent 15 days sitting for selection the first time and was pulled for the very last jury. Spent 10 days the second time and was selected once and the defendant copped a plea after jury selection. I’m not doing it again. Lawyers hate me and I’m not fond of them either. I’m going to pull the medical excuse next time and it’s legit. I toughed it out the first two times but now I feel I’ve met my obligation to society.

“The prosecutor asked the question, “Does anyone not want to be here for jury duty today?”\ .... I raised my hand”

And you made their day. They like getting you out of the way. What you should have done was be a compliant and meek as possible. Then when on a jury, use your unreviewable power for jury nullification.

DO you wish you were on Trump’s jury somewhere? Wish you were on the jury for some J6 political prisoner? Wish you were on the jury for that Marine on trial for restraining the psycho on the subway?

They needed your firm “not guilty” vote.

Bad move.

My experience, just a few weeks ago, was the attorney for the defendants pick the worst dressed people for the jury. If you dress half way decent, you probably won’t be picked. The jury looked like skanks and homeless - just saying

I was summoned for a grand jury on a murder case. The judge asked who really wanted to be there and I was the only one to raise my hand. I was picked to be an alternate but then the defence made a deal with the prosecution and the case didn’t go to trial. I would serve any time I am called. It’s the right thing to do.

I was on a jury that sent a repeat homo pervert to life in prison for child molestation. There was one juror who claimed that they could never convict someone for that based on the admission of a child, who was 15 at the time. Once we finally found him guilty and his past was revealed, this person turned white as a sheet. He kept on thanking us for being persistent in convincing him to vote guilty.

Yes jury duty sucks but it’s our duty to serve. Just like voting. I have been called several times. Served as an alternate once and also did grand jury.

My wife was a teacher in a rather well-to-do Catholic school. She got called for jury duty, so she sent a note home with her elementary aged class that she might be missing a few days due to jury duty.

One of her students had a dad that was a hot shot lawyer in town, who just happened to be buddies with the judge. Got my wife removed and didn't even have to call in and report.

The lawyer didn't want his kid to have a substitute teacher. Friends in high places!

Every time I’ve gone to jury duty they take one look at me and I’m dismissed. :)

I’d serve on any jury. I would help by not going for prosecutor overreach.

I've done and gotten the same thing. Called only something like 5 times in all these years and never sat once. I made it to the pool for questioning twice but was quickly dismissed. Four out of five times all I had to do was state my profession and business; Engineer, Small Business Owner.

Only once did I make it to advanced questioning for a competency trial of a fellow who while drunk driving the wrong way on an urban interstate killed like 5 innocent people. I watched him watch the proceeding and when asked if there was anyone who had reason to believe he should not be considered I raised my hand. The judge asked why and I asked to approach the bench with the prosecution and defense attorneys. The judge, annoyed, asked why? I said I had watched the defendant the whole afternoon as he tracked the questions and testimony. I watched his eyes and reactions. He is as sane as any one of us here. "Dismissed".

Civics day in high screwl they took us down to the courthouse and explained the system. I opined they didn't want competent jurors, they want fools who don't pay attention to anything. I got a scowl and then a little smile from the judge.

I was also on another jury where a prevert had contracted genital warts from being a playa with inappropriate wiener placement. He went to a urologist and he prescribed some ointment for his affliction. Instead of applying it three times a day, this jackass decided to amp it up and go hourly. Well, he developed a rash and some burning sensations. He was suing the doctor for malpractice. The usual pain and suffering. You could tell during the voir dire that the doctor was pissed. We were going to have to look pictures of the freak’s bloated, reddened dingfod. The women on the jury were not enthusiastic. Fortunately, they settled and we didn’t have to view his unit.

I always say that if I’m on a jury and somebody is fighting a ticket for double parking a ricer*, I say death penalty. If someone is on trial for destroying a red light camera, they’re not guilty for getting rid of those commie pieces of crap.

* I haven’t seen it in a while but jerks used to park their ricers diagonally taking up two to 3 parking spaces. It was to prevent damage and to show them off.

I served on a jury once and I firmly believe that everyone should serve on a jury once and once only.

I have been called to serve twice since that first time and am confident I will never serve again you just need to know how to answer the questions.

A friend of mine got stuck on the anti-cigarette civil case in LA a few decades back. He got to hang out with some hot blonde heiress also on the jury but the trial length tried everyone’s patience. The jury ended up recommending the maximum penalty by multiplying the number of people in the class action by the max award allowed per person. It amounted to billions.

My office mate was called to be on a jury that would judge whether or not a porn company's films were a violation of decency laws. They were warned ahead of time that the films featured the inappropriate use of fecal matter. Many, including my office mate, were excused claiming it would do irreparable harm to their psyche.

I might have asked "Can I eat some popcorn while we watch the films?" and have gotten kicked off as well.
