I've been working in midtown Manhattan for ten years now and the place has rather grown on me.

I know NYC has it's haters (usually people who have not spent a significant amount of time here and/or rely on what they see on the media).

For me, it's been a pretty safe place. You mind your own business (interpreted by out of towners as rude) and you likely won't have any issues.

It's a great walking city. Lots of parks (besides the big one at Central Park). Lot's to see, eat, and drink.

Don't need a car here. In fact, I have never brought my car into the city even once. I park at the commuter rail station in Connecticut and once I'm here, I get around all areas pretty quickly. If I lived here, I would definitely not bother with a car.

It is super expensive. You will need a lot of money to live here. I have best of both worlds. I get to work here and make the big money and then go home to my suburban CT town, where prices are much more reasonable (still higher than national average).

Also, you would be surprised, that I don't get flack for being a conservative and supporting Trump. Nobody really cares, really. Sure, the residents here vote overwhelmingly for the Democrats but it's not like they walk down the street asking you who you voted for or how you feel on the political questions of the day. They just don't care. They are minding their own business.

...and having fun doing it. I love NYC, but I'm a city kind of guy.

When is the best time in NYC weather-wise - not humid but not freezing cold? Whenever that is, I'd love to be in NYC - Manhattan - if I was rich enough.

It sounds as if you like NYC because you fit into a very narrow band of people who can experience it on your own terms.

A former Wall Street executive described his company’s London office that way. He said (I’m paraphrasing): “It was much better to travel to our London office than to work there, because you get to experience the delusional, fairytale version of London when you’re traveling on a $1,500 per diem company expense account.”

Living in Darien and commuting to Manhattan is a *lot* different than living in the city. I know Fairfield Country pretty well and could be *very* happy living there.

NYC? No thanks!

As someone who visited NYC and not lived there, maybe I saw the worst, aside from the tourist attractions like the USS Intrepid and such that make it a great place to visit. Much of the rest that I experienced made me not want to live there. You and others posted the cost of living is high. But there are other things such as smelling urine when walking past every other side-street. I was frequently approached by beggars, who were rude when they were drunk. The last time I was there people kept bumping into my mother (she was in her upper 70's at the time) while we walked on the sidewalk -- so much for everybody minding their own business in NYC.

At least that was my experience with NYC.

Like any small town, when I was growing up and even as an adult, people in one's neighborhood would smile and/or say "HELLO" when one passed each other on the street. People in stores ( even on Fifth Ave.! ) remembered you and often asked after other members of your family, AND strangers would often chat with you in a bookstore and grocery store.

You know WHO is/are VERY RUDE, in NYC?

TOURISTS and those who just moved there and that has more or less always been the case!

Yep. One thing you can say about residents of NYC is the VAST MAJORITY of registered voters are INDIFFERENT. They don’t even bother to vote and most don’t care who governs them.

For 3 consecutive mayoral election cycles, I have observed that at best, only 22% of registered voters bothered to vote on Election Day. With a Democrat to Republican registration ratio at around 7:1 in NYC, it goes without saying that you’ll get the likes of Bill De Blasio and Eric Adam’s as Mayor and Alvin Bragg as Manhattan District Attorney.

Keep telling yourself that. They're walking in their own myopic world thinking everyone they pass on the street is like them. Show them even the slightest bit of sanity and rationality and they'll turn on you like a rabid animal.

I'm not even talking about wearing a MAGA hat or letting them know you're on Free Republic. Just question their worldview and watch them explode. You'll find out about the absolute of their cult called "Cancel Culture" if you're lucky; you're just as likely to be physically attacked.
