Arrival
If ever there were a perfect movie, it’s this Amy Adams gem from Dune director Denis Villeneuve. The narrative is based on Story of Your Life, a Nebula-winning novella written by Ted Chiang, its themes exploring language barriers and bridging the gap between humanity and things we don’t understand. It’s heavy stuff for an alien drama, but trust us when we say it’s so, so worth your time.

I love Arrival. Great movie.
Arrival, REALLY!?!
After reading the next few, I swiped left.
Arrival is an incredible movie. I liked the subtle pro-life element too.
I like a few of these getting listed, but wouldn’t Rocky be considered a drama?
A personal favorite of mine is The Red Shoes (1948). I’m also a big Sidney Poitier fan and Heat of the Night is darn good.
A few others:
Joy Luck Club was a great look at Asian-American life
The Professional
Me Before You was special to me
How did “The Best Years of Our Lives” not make it on the list?
From Wikipedia:
The film was a critical and commercial success. It won seven Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director (William Wyler), Best Actor (Fredric March), Best Supporting Actor (Harold Russell), Best Film Editing (Daniel Mandell), Best Adapted Screenplay (Robert E. Sherwood), and Best Original Score (Hugo Friedhofer).
In addition, Russell was also awarded an honorary Academy Award, the only time in history that two such awards were given for a single performance.
It was the highest-grossing film in both the United States and United Kingdom since the release of Gone with the Wind, and is the sixth most-attended film of all time in the United Kingdom, with over 20 million tickets sold.
The list seems to be drenched in wokeness.
Good Lord this is a new low for these magazines and their “rankings”.
Gone Girl 32nd
Jaws 38th
The Godfather 61st
No mention of The Hustler anywhere. I guess they didn’t google or wiki search that one.
I haven't seen all of these films; however, many are misnamed as "dramas" and the remake ( what is it now...the 4th or 5th remake?) of LITTLE WOMEN is garbage to the 10th degree!
CHILDREN OF MEN is a DYTOPIAN/SCI-FI movie!
Rebecca, Vertigo, Rear Window, and a few others are mystery/film noir/other!
Arrival bored me.
And honorable mention to Last of the Mohicans — a good movie with one of the greatest soundtracks ever
The Cruel Sea, 1953 starring Jack Hawkins
The Verdict, starring Paul Newman
Notorious, starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman.
We could go on and on - but this list was hit by a woke bomb and is useless.
Dead Poets Society
Heat (maybe the best modern crime drama)
I’ve never heard of “The Red Shoes.” The Criterion Collection film is on YouTube. I’m adding it to my watch list. Thanks for the recommendation.
Right now I’m watching “The Talk Of The Town” (1942) on YT starring Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, and Ronald Colman. It is a “sparkling gem from Hollywood’s Golden Age of Comedy, nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture.” (back when the Academy Awards were really something).
(I often split movies over two nights)
Harpers Bazaar last I looked was a fashion magazine not one seriously into movies. We had the Variety list this week as well and Variety isn’t one I take seriously for movies either. It’s just and industry rag nothing else. I’d take any Freepers list over these ones created by woke loons.
indeed, good move. I like how they figured out how to communicate.
If you read and like sci-fi, Project Hail Mary is awesome.
Well I’m a New Yorker grandmother from deeeeep south
Regardless …what? Belfast not a classic plot line not a top 100 not top 500
This little women version sucked
Bouncing back and forth time travel
No
The rest I’ve never seen.
“Cast a Giant Shadow” should be on that list.
Great Kirk Douglas movie.
For whatever reason, when I opened the article only the first 20 displayed. I’m sad to confess that, being a Neanderthal, I haven’t seen any of them, and only ever heard of five of them. Alas
What a bizarre list. It seems to be yet another case of a 23 year old writer not having much of a clue about films made before 2010.
