In 1978, as a pair of newly minted Ensigns, a shipmate and I showed up in dress blues to watch the Army/Navy game at the Officer's Club at Newport, RI. We were the only two officers in uniform surrounded by Commanders, Captains, and Admirals in civvies.

They were so impressed that two young non-Academy grads would get dressed up to watch the game that we weren't allowed to pay for food or drinks all evening.

Navy trashed Army and went ahead in the series for the first time in over 20 years. It was great to watch all these senior officers bouncing around like kids.

Later when I was on a Joint Service assignment at an Army installation in NJ we would get game tickets from base services. So, where did we get seats? Right behind the Military Academy Prep School. They asked us why a bunch of Navy officers were sitting on the Army side. I told them that we preferred to look at Navy. If we were on the Navy side we would have to look at Army.
