I used to live about a mile from there. We rarely encountered bears.
My mother in law lives in a town near Asheville, in an old residential neighborhood. The locals set their car alarms off before opening the doors of the house to step outside. That’s to warn the bears they’re coming out. They have had bears in the garage, on the porch, in the tree outside the house.

Yes, they can open the car doors. A bear got into the car of one of my relatives, locked himself in, ate some Chitos, and made a mess of the inside of the car. It was discovered when it blew the car horn repeatedly. When the car door was opened, the bear ran out and disappeared.
