I've studied nuclear war for 35 years -- you should be worried. | Brian Toon | TEDxMileHigh
TEDx Talks ^ | 2/1/18 | TEDx Talks

For the first time in decades, it's hard to ignore the threat of nuclear war. But as long as you're far from the blast, you're safe, right? Wrong. In this sobering talk, atmospheric scientist Brian Toon explains how even a small nuclear war could destroy all life on earth -- and what we can do to prevent it. A professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Brian Toon investigates the causes of the ozone hole, how volcanic eruptions alter the climate, how ancient Mars had flowing rivers, and the environmental impacts of nuclear war. He contributed to the U.N.’s Nobel Peace Prize for climate change and holds numerous scientific awards, including two NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement. He is an avid woodworker. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

I wonder if that more accurately means currently planted choices of crops won’t grow and if alternatives will? Albeit perhaps in lower yields. And, what would it take to switch over to those? Drastic simplification, but perhaps enough food to feed survivirs of the war.

If 🇹🇷 is indeed, under Pakistans nuclear umbrella protection, what advantage does that practically give Turkey , given the inability of Pakistan 🇵🇰 to deliver theirs very far away?

“Revelation 9:13–21 .....”One third of human kind will die.....” Sounds like a serious nuclear exchange possibly an EMP followed by nuclear winter.”

I’m not doubting Bible prophecy, but, we’re all going to die.

“There is not going to be a nuclear war ”

Anything is possible.
Wars are never logical .
Iran would unleash a nuke with zero regrets.

That was 10 years ago. Has anyone studied the microbial growth? The experiment was nifty but why not take samples of the leaflitter and study what kind of life is there.

"I understand that its a possibility, but its not going to stop me from living my life happily."

It is going to stop you from living your life happily when it actually happens, don't worry.

I read years ago that scientists in 1945 said nothing would grow in Hiroshima or Nagasaki for 97 years due to the A-bombs.

Yet the next spring the trees sprouted and flowers bloomed.

Some of the trees and flowers were mutants but as you say, they bloomed.

Well well well....good to see that no one gaf about nukes. Hell I dont because I know my whole area is done...here in Huntsville, Alabama. Maybe y’all might consider simple math; A 1990 US Army study concluded that it would take 10 Megatons total of nuclear weapons to disable the USA’s ability to function as a nation/civilization. Sounds about right. Split up the 350KT city busters and 50KT tactical nukes...10MT should wipe out the US nicely.

The same 1990 study calculated that 5000 MEgatons of destructive nukes exist in the world between all nuke capable countries. If you use Hiroshima as the metric...100,000 dead for each 15KT...5000MT works out to 33 Billion dead. Means theres enough nukes to kill every human being 4X over. Nice thought huh? So, yeah...dont worry about what will happen in a global thermonuclear war...because unimaginable death and suffering is a certainty. Have a nice day.

100% true.

Related: Most people are blissfully unaware that radiation is still flowing into the Pacific from Fukushima (I won’t eat Pacific seafood ever again; haven’t since shortly after the meltdowns).

And here in the US it’s public policy to renew licenses on antique & technologically obsolete nukular power plants. Nice. /s

It depends on your definition of “small nuclear war”. It would most likely start with a nuclear EMP attack that would destroy the electrical infrastructure and the computers in all modern cars and truck. It eventually wipe out 80-90% of the population.

Read “One Second After” by William R. Forschen for a chilling read about a nuclear EMP.
