Though I can't listen very long to most Death bands because of the singing style, ("Lamb Of God" being a typical exception), I say that if you're looking for where the best rock drummers, bass players and guitarists ply their trade, it's Death Metal. Some of the musicianship is mind blowing, simply jaw-dropping.
On a related issue, as a former sound and lighting tech, I found those playing metal to be the nicest, most humble folks - decent, too.
If you’re looking for progressive, instrumental metal try Animals as Leaders. And yes, Sabaton is amazing too.
Bkmk
Epica and Avantasia are good places to start with symphonic metal.
That’s the point I’m at now. I’m too old for pits. The last one I was in was about ten years ago and I was walking like ET for the next couple of days because I was so sore. I still love metal and go to metal shows.
Good buddy I work with knows every word of every Metallica album since garage days. Most charitable guy I know and is a church goer.
It’s not the music’s fault your acquaintance is a POS
There are surprising conservatives in metal. Mustaine, Tom Araya from Slayer, Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden talks a lot about Christianity and how it’s affected him. Also, I found an interview with Bobby Blitz from Overkill where he mocks Al Gore democrats and “Leonardo Decaprio tells us to wipe our ass with less toilet paper when he owns nine f—-ing houses.”
“Metal musicians”
Kind of an oxymoron. There’s nothing musical about heavy metal.
One of my kids loved it. Here's an example of what he listened to. I loved metal, so I understood why he liked it, but I'm not a fan of those vocals. It turns out, though, that the lyrics are pretty good (I had to look them up). The musicians are amazing.
Well, that's because your now deaf as a post... :)
Sorry dude, those wasn't gods that made that stuff... That was someone else entirely..!
I mean “Hell Bent For Leather”?!?!?! Come on.
Also Freddy Mercury went Leather too, dead giveaway.
I remember the warnings of these same things put out in 1964 about the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
I have never been a fan of rock music.
1986 I was 18-19 years old.
Great Time to be young and alive.
Miss those days...
Saxon even released a song about Covid called Remember the Fallen
Speaking of Slayer.

Some people need to lighten up...
For all anyone knows, the choir of angels is belting out some Van Halen and Ozzy.
And if they aren't, maybe the other place is having more fun.
