I know my husband called the chapter his uncle was in but got the impression they only check messages once a week. We are still working away. My husband said we have 3 angles going after I blew my top earlier. Just important I think. He served in WWII also. Uncle was in WI so we are working long distance also.
Good luck, but the mil and VA are PITAs. VSO might be the best bet.
You might check with a local Eagles Loodge. Many members are veterans who might be able to point you in the right direction. I hope you are able to get it done!
I live in WI. My father-in-law had military honors at his funeral. I think the local VFW chapter provided the men who honored him with a gun salute. Maybe try contacting a VFV Hall near where your uncle lived. They might be able to help.
Check with the nearest National Cemetary to where you are having the service.
Unless the family member was active duty, the honor guard is normally connected to the VFW, Cemetary or American Legend. Or a combination thereof.
The gal I knew that did it was connected to the Cemetary & VFW. She had to supply her own uniform, weapon, etc.
Diana can you help them? You are a vet. Their earlier post explains what they need.
I have seen some similar situations. The local VFW or American Legion posts are usually helpful, but a lot of the guys who participate are getting up there or have passed. Out here, the gents sometimes drive a considerable distance nowadays.
In one instance the VA was “less than effective,” and one of the family happened to run into a Patriot Guard Rider who was not only familiar with the process, but also a pit bull. There are still guys like this who may not be “credentialed,” but they know who is... and they are motivated.
Another situation involved a Marine vet, and the Marine Corps League helped out.
Prayers that your effort’s on behalf of your husband’s uncle bear fruit. Keep us posted.
