'I’m kind of speechless': Harborplace pavilions to be torn down

BALTIMORE — Once a beacon for activity in downtown Baltimore, the Harborplace pavilions will now be torn down by the new owners who are on a mission to revive the area.

It's a place that was once booming with tourists. Now, when you take a walk through the Harborplace pavilions, doors are locked and many stores sit vacant.

As the entire harbor is getting redeveloped, one project will be tearing down the two pavilions by the new owners, MCB Real Estate. Marketing Managing Director Jarnell Swecker said this is a result of what the community repeatedly shared.

"They need something right here that will say we want to see this we want to come to Baltimore to see that," said Joseph Weinstein, who grew up in Baltimore.

He recalls the good old days of going to the harbor. "This was the place we would come to as kids, as a family to go on a Sunday trip or a family outing,” said Weinstein.

He said it brings him a sense of hope of what's to come in replacing the pavilions.

"The new developer, maybe he has big plans for something that will actually make tourists want to come specifically to this area,” said Weinstein.

But for some that work in the pavilions, news of complete demolition brings a sense of shock.

"I can't even process words right now because of that because we've been here for so long especially the company that I’m with, I’m kind of speechless,” said Joshua Hughes, who is a manager at Life in Charm City.

Hughes has worked in the pavilions for 18 years.

"Once I started here, you couldn’t even move down here, you were literally bumping elbows into people that's how crowded it was," said Hughes.

He said he's sad to know the heart of the harbor will be torn down, but sees the potential for bringing it back to the glory days.

"They should keep the mom and pop shops, that's what everybody wants," said Hughes.

While there is no timeline for the demolition, Swecker said they are taking community aspirations to the design phase where they will then have more on a reimagined Harborplace.

Your growing up in Baltimore tale brought back a lot of nice, family memories of living there ... then again, it was in the 1950s and 1960s (when things began to get crazy in DC just 35 miles down the B-W Parkway.)

Many thanks for posting. Cheers!

You’re most welcome-glad you enjoyed it!

I still remember the getting up at 4 AM, all of us four boys getting into the car with our Dad, who was not known for doing things to interact with us, he did’t fish, didn’t play catch, but...he liked the crabbing process.

My mom would get up and make us bacon and eggs before we left, fix us lunch in paper sacks, and we would pile bleary eyed into the car to drive out to the Chesapeake and rent a boat.

It was a guy thing...:) One of the few “guy things” my Dad did with us boys.

I remember how weird it was to dangle a chicken neck on a string, and when they grabbed on, you just pulled them up. I was puzzled (I began doing this with him about the age of seven) that the crab wouldn’t let go unless you pulled them out of the water, and that was what you needed the net for!

This is all very familiar to me. Personally, I liked wading through the reeds along the shoreline seeking out the soft-shells ... Man, those soft shell crab sandwiches are good!

My bride of 38 years, Rosie, had never been east of New Mexico, but she sure developed a taste for crabcakes and soft-shell crabs when we went back there a few years back! We keep Old Bay on the shelf (along with several other "secret ingredients") for the steamed shrimp I make several times a year ... following my late Dad's "world famous" recipe ... or so he claimed!

Cheers! & be well.

Years ago you could take construction size coolers with beer to the upper deck of Memorial Stadium to watch the O’s. The language got very BLUE up there. Harbor Place at one time the toast of the town and now the town is toast. Line from the Wizard of Oz “I’d turn back if I were you”.

Oh, yeah. I was just a kid but I spent a lot of time in the upper deck at Memorial Stadium ... with the coolers all about!
(I even remember listening to the O’s on my portable radio when I was 6 or 7. Bailey Goss and, can you believe it?, Ernie Harwell were the play-by-play guys.)
