Same prank was played at Georgia Tech in the 70s.
When they got in between the tall buildings south of campus, there was impressive reverberation!

Our balloons never exploded, nothing to contain the hot gas. They just flared. It would take something more sophisticated than what we were playing with then to cause any boom or reverberation. As little fire bugs, we didnt care. lol.
