I had noted before that a retail jeweler friend of mine had told me:

To show that the register is accurate (how precisely the hands line up with the time) the options are to have the hands at 10 x 10 or 8 x 4.
The marketing gurus, however, decided that the hands at 8 x 4 look like a frown or that the watch is “sad”.
10 x 10 looks more like a smile and a “happy face”.

Marketing, they is so smart.
Just ask them.

Yes, I remember finding out about the practice maybe 40 years ago.
