Ha! We just talked about cabbage rolls the other day. We make a ton of them every fall and put them away in trays to pull out of the freezer when needed. I love cabbage rolls. I sometimes make a roasting pan of Cabbage No Rolls.

You just chop the cabbage, put half of it in the bottom of the roasting pan (put olive oil in first), then mix your meat, rice, carrot, onion, celery, spices in a large bowl then spread that on top of your cabbage. Add the rest of the shredded cabbage on top, pour your tomato juice over everything, cover and bake for a few hours.

What you get is the same as if you took a couple of cabbage rolls and chopped them up on your plate. Same ingredients, same lovely flavor, much, much, less work.

I made a meatball stew. using the tomatoes and green beans from the garden. and dumplings.

I got so many great ideas that I need to take out more ground beef. Stuffed peppers, cabbage rolls, stir fried rice, and Mongolian beef- I’ll be trying all those soon

That sounds delicious. I’ve gotten so many good ideas that I have to get more ground beef for later in the week

I’ve done that with stuffed peppers. I found a soup recipe, and hubby likes it better than the stuffed pepper because it isn’t quite so full of vegetables. I guess it depends how many you add.

I’ll be making that cabbage casserole this fall, sounds like good comfort food.

“I just ordered everything needed for French Onion Soup and a big tray of Lasagna. It must be the change of seasons that’s making me think of all of the yummy cool weather food.”

I like winter cooking much better than summer. I guess I like the heavy comfort foods. And the soups!

Hi CB!

I think you’re right - winter cooking seems to be more comfort foods (indoors for the evening, snow coming down) that make you feel all snuggly and safe, inside.

The summer foods are more the fun foods it seems. Burgers, corn-on-the-cob, salads.....lots of barbequed stuff. All of the outdoor stuff.

Tonite, we’re having seafood filet gumbo and dirty rice.........

It makes so much that my wife invited our friends to share and eat it all up.

Last week I visited a business associate that regaled me with his video of how to smoke a whole alligator. His alligator feast included other Louisiana dishes and whetted my appetite for filet gumbo

That sounds good! I ate venison burgers the last two night.

So, I’ve been making my own bean sprouts for years. The last time I placed an order I ordered quite a bit, but the last batch didn’t seem to produce too well.
I’m going to order more but was wondering if there’s a way to store the seeds so they last better, like maybe a couple years?

I just use ming and alfalfa although I’ve tried others.

Thanks.

“So, I’ve been making my own bean sprouts for years”

I remember that! I wanted to try it and then I forgot. But you know what, that would make an excellent subject, how to grow some kind of vegetable in the dead of winter. Or you can’t grow anything outside, there could be a variety of reasons for that. Can I pencil you in?

Anyway I know Ellendra knows a whole lot about harvesting seeds. So she probably knows about how best to save them? I would appreciate being pinged, cuz I would like to know as well.

I save seeds from all my non-hybrid plants, but I just make sure they’re dry and then I put them each in baggies with what they are and the date. And then stick them in a coffee can with the year on it. Probably at least part of that is wrong LOL.

I cook a lot of Chinese type foods, ming beans. and alfalfa is great substitute for lettuce salads and sandwiches, sometimes better!
Sure, count me in! I’ve always thought of sprouts as a survival food, plus I like it and is affordable.

I thought about selling it to local pet stores, it’s so easy.
Grass is good for their digestion.

Does he nibble on the grass? For some reason when my cats go outside they eat the grass. Then they come inside and throw up. Cadbury did the ultimate indoor cat thing the last time I let him out, he came back inside to use the litter box and then wanted out again.

I’ve never taken that close a look a bird’s nether regions, and I’m afraid to look it up, so I can’t tell you if those body parts change. But they do change their feathers, the size of their combs, their vocalizations, and their behaviors.

Most seeds store best if kept dry and cold. An airtight container in the freezer works well. For sprouting, I’d suggest first dividing them into whatever proportions you plan to use them in.

Some species last longer in storage than others. I think onions are the ones with the shortest storage life, but I’m going by memory here. Beans can last for ages as long as they’re kept dry. There have been bean seeds found in archeological digs and in the ruins of old villages, that were carbon-dated at over a thousand years old, and they still sprouted!

When I took a tour of the Baker Creek seed bank, the manager said that the storage life of a seed is best if the percent humidity and the temperature in Fahrenheit added together total less than 100.

To: All; Apple Pan Dowdy; Diana in Wisconsin

Thanks to our Apple Pan Dowdy for this week’s topic and inspirational words!!

Getting/Being Right with God

This combines APD’s post 100 to Diana with additional food for thought.

Diana in Wisconsin: ”I’d rather head for Heaven than eat bugs and live in a cave or the shell of our former home.”

I totally agree with you, Diana. And thinking about CottonBall’s original question of “What do you think is the most crucial survival topic to start with?”, I would say number 1 should be to make sure I am right with God. By that I mean a firm foundation in the importance of a strong personal relationship with Jesus, knowing that He paid the price once and for all for my sins, assuring me of an eternity in Heaven, my life belongs to Him, and what ever time I have left on this earth is His to direct.

I’m trying to imbed as much of His Word (scripture) in my mind and heart in case my Bible is lost or taken away. I’m trying to learn to live in total trust and faith that If and when things get hard, He WILL provide.

That said, I still understand the necessity to prep, and pray that He will guide me with that and keep me mindful to remember that having enough for my family to survive is good, but having enough to share with others around us is also important.

So I guess what I am trying to say is #1 in the prep plan is a firm foundation in attitude and faith to guide the way for all the rest. Because when the SHTF for real it may not be possible to protect all the amassed stored food, planted gardens, generators, ammunition/guns ……

You may ask, “What does it mean to have a firm foundation in attitude and faith to guide the way, and how do I find it? God’s Word, the Bible, tells us how. It tells us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.“ — Deuteronomy 31

Praying the scripture (the very WORD of God) is exceptionally powerful. A wonderful example is Psalm 91:
”Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” — Psalm 91:1-4

Pray this scripture of Psalm 91, then add your own words like: “Father, I want to live in the shadow of Your wing during this horrifying time , and I don’t know what to do, help me remember that You are with me and that I am never alone. I cannot live without You. I cannot face tomorrow without the promise of Your presence. Today I choose to walk and live under the protection of You, The Most High. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

What other powerful words of the promise of protection can you find in God’s word and how would you pray them? Share them with us. I am going to add them to the list I have written on the pasted notes added to my Bible as a quick reference when the time comes that I desperately need them.
