7-year-old makes 2.95-carat discovery at Arkansas' Crater of Diamonds

Sept. 7 (UPI) -- A 7-year-old girl on a birthday trip to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas found a big present -- a 2.95-carat diamond.

Arkansas State Parks said Aspen Brown of Paragould, Ark., was visiting the park with her family to celebrate her birthday when she spotted the diamond in the park's north search area.

Officials said the 2.95-carat diamond is about the size of a green pea, with a golden-brown color.

The diamond is the second-largest found by a park visitor this year, officials said. The largest was a 3.29-carat brown diamond found in March.

The Murfreesboro park was mined by commercial diamond hunters before becoming a state park in 1972.

Boy Howdy, I would hate to be the suitor in 10-15 years that thinks he can impress her with a half or even one carat engagement ring.

Does the kid get to keep it or has her family learned a valuable lesson about keeping their mouths shut?

I’ve always wondered what they might find if they allowed serious mining? People have been finding diamonds in that over worked piece of ground for decades. Imagine what could be found if they started removing and processing overburden and got down to the meat of the pipe?

As indicated in the article, it was commercially mined for decades ... unsuccessfully.

You get to keep any gems you find. A State Park Ranger and other geologist/gemologists are sometimes there to help you identify what you’ve found.

I’ve been there twice in the 70s and didn’t find anything. One thing I’ve noticed is the past several years they’ve been finding bigger diamonds that has come to the surface there. It’s best to go there after its rained. They’re easy to spot.

Those are natural crystal faces and entirely consistent with the habit of natural diamond e.g. octahedral and cubic often with a rounded form.

Far under capitalized according to this article but also subeconomic.

A carat is a weight. If they cut it, it might only be 2 carats or something, but I dont know what that would be worth.
