I don’t understand why the DS/left is backtracking. Are they afraid they’ve pushed too far too fast? Afraid of backlash? What is their panic?

IMO they’ve gone along with - or pushed - stupider things in the past.

They are afraid the noncompliance will spread and begin to affect other subjects.
