Russians advance near three settlements – General Staff report

The Russians are advancing near Klishchiivka, Marinka and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk Oblast, while the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to advance on the Melitopol front and consolidate their positions.

Details:
During the day, the occupiers launched 2 missile- and more than 30 air strikes, fired 35 times from MLRSs at the positions of our troops and populated areas. More than 20 combat clashes took place over the day.
Over the course of the day, the Air Force of Ukraine’s Defense Forces carried out six strikes on areas of concentration of occupiers’ personnel. Ukraine’s Rocket Forces and Artillery struck four Russian control points, one area of concentration of personnel, weapons and military equipment, and three artillery systems at firing positions over the course of the day.
The operational situation on the VOLYN and POLISSIA fronts remained unchanged.
On the SIVERSHCHYNA and SLOBOZHANSHCHYNA fronts, the Russians carried out mortar and artillery bombardments of more than 20 settlements, including Kliusy and Karpovychi in Chernihiv Oblast; Sydorivka, Volfyne, Hrabovske in Sumy Oblast; and Chervona Zoria, Veterynarne, Kozacha Lopan and Strilecha in Kharkiv Oblast.
On the KUPIANSK front, the settlements of Dvorichna, Synkivka, Kyslivka and Berestove in Kharkiv Oblast came under artillery and mortar bombardments.
On the LYMAN front, the Russians conducted air strikes in the areas of Tverdokhlibove, Bilohorivka and Serebrianka Forest in Luhansk Oblast. About 15 settlements came under artillery fire, including Karmazynivka, Nevske, Kreminna, Bilohorivka in Luhansk Oblast, Rozdolivka and Spirne in Donetsk Oblast.
On the BAKHMUT front, the occupiers conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the area of Klishchiivka, Donetsk Oblast. They launched an air strike near Vesele, Donetsk Oblast. More than 20 settlements came under artillery shelling, including Pryvillia, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Markove, Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Klishchiivka in Donetsk Oblast.
On the AYDIIVKA front, the settlements of Oleksandropil, Stepove, Avdiivka, Sieverne, Pervomaiske and Nevelske, Donetsk Oblast, were shelled with artillery.
On the MARINKA front, Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold back the advance of Russian troops in the area of Marinka and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk Oblast. The occupiers conducted air strikes in the areas of Marinka and Novomykhailivka. The settlements of Zhelanne Druhe, Krasnohorivka, Marinka, Pobieda, Yelyzavetivka and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk Oblast came under artillery fire.
On the SHAKHTARSKE front, the Russian forces conducted an air strike near Staromaiorsk, Donetsk Oblast. Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Novoukrainka, Velyka Novosilka, Blahodatne and Urozhaine in Donetsk Oblast came under artillery fire

On the ZAPORIZHZHIA front, the occupiers conducted air strikes in the areas of Mala Tokmachka and Robotyne in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Their artillery shelling damaged more than 30 settlements, including Huliaipilske, Charivne, Yehorivka, Stepove, Lobkove and Piatikhatky in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
On the KHERSON front, the Russians conducted air strikes near Dachi and Zymivnyk in Kherson Oblast. More than 20 settlements came under artillery shelling of the occupiers, including Poniativka, Kherson, Stanislav in Kherson Oblast, Ochakiv and Solonchaky in Mykolaiv Oblast.
At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to conduct the offensive operation on the MELITOPOL front, consolidating their positions and carrying out counter-battery operations.
RUSSIAN OCCUPATIONAL FORCES CONTINUE TO ACTIVELY STEAL AND ABUSE CIVILIANS. For example, their unit from the Republic of Buryatia of the Russian Federation arrived in Tokmak, Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Members of this unit systematically check local residents for papers proving the right to live in their homes. Russia has been going through a difficult period on the territory of Ukraine for a long time. Kiev’s successful plans of action have trapped the Russians in a vast expanse from Kherson to Luhansk. In the last two weeks we have witnessed thousands of clashes in Zaporizhia. Between Kherson and Dnipro, it was the scene of exciting boat landing operations, sudden raids and fierce clashes.
Now a surprise Ukrainian city, which has been silent for a long time, is starting to move again. In this newsletter, we will go with you to the city of Soledar in the Donetsk region. Of course, there were occasional offensive operations and military activity in this city. But not as much as the Zaporizhia, Kherson, Dnipro, Crimean and other southern Ukrainian fronts. After a long break, with the start of activity in Soledar, all the attention focused on this city. Here the last Wagner mercenaries clashed with Ukrainian troops for Moscow. But now there are Russians in the city and they are trying to resist in order not to lose this land to the Ukrainians.
The Ukrainian side, on the other hand, started to carry out a determined offensive plan in Soledar, as it did in Zaporizhia. We’ve seen the first signs of this in the past few days. The Command Vyaly air unit of the 30th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade of the Ukrainian army discovered the Russian military training camp in Soledar. This discovery is thought to have been made by unmanned aerial vehicles. The Ukrainian brigade gave the coordinates of the Russian military camp in the city to the Ukrainian artillery. From this moment on, Soledar began to flare up again with artillery attacks.
All preparations were completed and the Ukrainian artillery units were locked on their targets. Later, the huge military camp headquarters of the Russians in the Donetsk region of Soledar was destroyed by a high-precision JDAM aerial bomb. The video of the critical attack was watched many times on social media. It was clearly evident in the images that the JDAM bomb had hit the Russian military camp violently, and then huge smokes emerged in the base area. Serious military losses were mentioned after the destruction of this Russian base by a pinpoint JDAM attack. Because it was known that there were many Russian soldiers in this training facility in Soledar. Ukrainian sources mention that over 100 Russian soldiers were destroyed.
This striking attack seems to be one of the most resounding examples of recent Ukrainian attacks in Donetsk. At present, the offensive operations of the Ukrainians continue in the city of Bakhmut. Ukrainian forces carried out an incredible attack here, resulting in the destruction of a $10 million combat vehicle belonging to the Russian army.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that a Ka-52 was shot down by the Ukrainian Air Force in the direction of Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region. Ukraine’s 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade announced that it shot down another Ka-52 helicopter with an anti-aircraft missile near Robotyne, a village in the Zaporizhzhia region, approximately two hours after this critical attack. Soldiers from the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian army claimed responsibility for this critical attack. It was reported that the Russian Ka-52 helicopter was shot down with MANPADS portable air defense systems.

President’s Office hopes to agree on special tribunal for Russian crime of aggression before end of year

Andrii Smyrnov, Deputy Head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, believes that the format for creating a special tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine can be determined before the end of the year.

Smyrnov recalled that the next meeting of the coordination group would be held in The Hague in September. The meeting will include 38 countries and touch on the possible format of the special tribunal.
Smyrnov said that currently three models are being considered: one based on the decision of the UN General Assembly, which Ukraine considers the most correct; one on the basis of a multilateral treaty; and the so-called hybrid tribunal, which will operate on the basis of the Ukrainian judicial system and which Ukraine opposes.

“The key [reason - ed.] is that during martial law, the implementation of such a tribunal would require amendments to the Constitution. It will be impossible to do this,” he explained.
According to Smyrnov, negotiations on the format of the future tribunal within the framework of the work of the coordination group are at the stage of the “ongoing debates”.
“There are various other compromise options that we cannot tell you about at the moment, they are still a diplomatic secret, we are discussing them behind closed doors, but we and our key partners are on the way to finalising the agreements on the model and work of the tribunal,” the deputy chairman of the President’s Office concluded.
Earlier in an interview with European Pravda, Anton Korynevych, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that a decision on how exactly the tribunal for the Russian crime of aggression will look has not yet been made.
Ukraine, along with its allies and partners, worked out three models of establishing and launching the special tribunal for prosecuting the Russian crime of aggression.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis have discussed the situation in the Black Sea region at the meeting in Athens on 21 August after Russia’s withdrawal from the grain deal.

Zelenskyy remarked that Ukraine seeks the support of Greece to get a guarantee of shipping security from all its Black Sea ports, especially Odesa.
“Ukraine has created an alternative grain corridor in the Black Sea. It can operate but in order for its operation to be stable, the air shield needs to be strengthened,” he explained.
Zelenskyy called upon Mitsotakis to make his contribution to the all-European security by helping Kyiv “protect Black Sea water area with air defence systems”.
“I have suggested an option for this discussion, how this can be done.What is really important is that Greek companies are ready to partake in the transportation of the Ukrainian grain,” Zelenskyy added.
BACKGROUND:
On 17 July, Russia announced the suspension of the grain deal and threatened the parties willing to continue the initiative without Russia with “risks”. Moreover, Russia has started launching large-scale attacks on the port infrastructure of Odesa and Danube ports.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis have signed a joint declaration on Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration in Athens.

As the document states, Ukraine and Greece “confirm their commitment to strengthen joint efforts in supporting the integration of Ukraine with the Alliance and implementation of NATO standards.”
Athens declares that it will continue its military, technical, defence, and humanitarian support to Ukraine, as well as contribute to the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.
The parties also stated that Ukraine’s security is “vital for the stability of the Euro-Atlantic area”, and supported the role of the NATO-Ukraine Council as a platform for expanding cooperation between Kyiv and Brussels.

Ihor Zhovkva, deputy head of the President’s Office, clarified that Greece has become the 24th member state of the alliance with which Ukraine has formalised support for Ukraine’s NATO membership.
“Only a quarter of the total number of members remains, eight countries with which we have not yet concluded such declarations. At the same time, most of these countries have already expressed support for us, it remains only to put it on paper,” Zhovkva said.
BACKGROUND:
-The issue of Ukraine’s membership in the alliance became one of the topics of the Vilnius NATO summit in July this year.
-The summit agreed to remove the requirement for an action plan for membership on Ukraine’s way to the Alliance. At the same time, the Allies made it clear that they would invite Ukraine to join NATO, “when the conditions are met”. Greece is ready to join the program of rebuilding Ukraine with a focus on the city of Odesa and its historical buildings.

“Mister President, Greece will join the titanic efforts to reconstruct and rebuild your country using our broad experience – in the construction sector, through state and private partnership, having powerful capabilities in the digitalization, healthcare sectors, in protection of historical sights – with the focus on the city of Odesa, the historical centre of which with the support of Greece was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites,” Mitsotakis stated.
He added that Greece could mainly help restore the historical buildings damaged in the war.
Mitsotakis also mentioned the special significance of the city of Mariupol for Greece, as many residents of Mariupol are of Greek descent.
Zelenskyy reported after the talks that Greece will join the so-called aircraft coalition and train the Ukrainian pilots of the F-16 fighters.
BACKGROUND:
On 21 August, in the evening, Zelenskyy arrived in Athens after visiting the Netherlands and Denmark.
After meeting the Prime-Minister and President of Greece, Zelenskyy will participate in an informal supper where the leaders of Western Balkan countries and Ursula von der Leyen, President of European Commission, are also expected to be present.

On 21 August, unknown people changed some place names in Moscow on the maps of the non-profit web mapping project Open StreetMap.
The changes remain valid as of 11:00, 21 August.
The centre of Moscow has “suffered” the most.
In particular, the map now reads:
“Rouble [Russian national currency – ed.] is dead”,
“Rashka [a derogatory form of the name of Russia – ed.] is dying”,
“More than 250,000 dead Russians in the special military operation [this is how Russian authorities call their war against Ukraine – ed.]”,
“Putin has scr**ed up the country”, etc.
OSM positions itself as “a free geographic database updated and maintained by a community of volunteers”.
OpenStreetMap uses the Wikipedia principle to create the map, meaning that every registered user can make changes to the map.
