That’s what buffets are for.

Even if it’s $50.00, at least you know what everybody’s order cost. And twenty people won’t spend but $1000.00.

I learned some valuable lessons early in my career. I was on a field assignment in Tacoma, WA and turned around and there was my boss. Weirdest thing ever. He just popped up unannounced. We took me out to lunch and he had drank his normal four martinis while I’m eating a light sandwich (no drinks at lunch because I was working on dangerous equipment).

The bill came and what did he say? “You pay and put it on your expense report,” naturally. He was the guy who approved my expense report of course.

I found out from colleagues that he pulled that stunt all the time. He drove to Tacoma from the San Francisco Bay Area to pick up his daughter who was in college. He had the company pay for his travel, hotel, food, martinis, etc. Our “work” discussion was basically “You’re doing a good job. You like the work?” “Oh yeah, it’s great.” End of discussion.

What a sleaze bag. We used to joke he was so cheap he bought his shoes one at a time.

I made friends with a local attorney after a case we worked on. We used to meet weekly for lunch at one of his favorite delis and took turns paying the bill. We both had simple tastes. He was old school and had been admitted way back in the 70s. He would be sure to go to the register and get his 15% senior discount just to get the bill down. I assured him he didn’t have to do that but it was a habit. I was sorry when he retired.

The establishment and the wait staff would be happy just to get the group out of the restaurant even without tip. I used to wait tables in my youth, nobody ever wanted black tables. Just treat them respectfully, get their food, get them out of the place without incident.

In my experience the elderly are sucky tippers. And they also are most entitled.

Browse around waiting blogs and it is a frequent ploy for certain elements of society to rack up a massive bill, start a fight, and use it an excuse to leave without paying.

Who goes to dinner without knowing who is paying? Every restaurant I've been to asks upfront: will this be together or separate? If I call and invite someone to dinner, I pay or if I'm asked they pay unless otherwise agreed to.

IOW, work out the details before ordering food. Sheesh, how hard is that?

This is one of my pain points. I hate being expected to split other people’s bills. We went out for dinner and the other couple brought their mother, ordered appetizers which we didn’t want or eat & drinks (I don’t drink) plus the ordered high end entrees which is fine but what for me should have been a $100 dinner for two became a $300 bill. Now, I set the expectation at the beginning of dinner that we take care of our own checks.

Title says. “$7k birthday dinner bill”

Article says, “the group received a $4,600 bill”

`````````````````````````````````````````````
Was the extra $2,400 a tip?
