OWB; Thanks! Aluminum wiring is very poor. Becomes brittle with age and develops a surface that is not conductive.

I have never been there, were buildings were pretty close to each other? They will need to take a look at the materials used in buildings and proximity after this.

Similar events in US history. The Chicago and Peshtigo fires happened on the same day in dry windy weather. It probably was not Mrs. OLeary's cow, but someone drinking in her barn.

Peshtigo Fire

Snip..."When the flames eventually died out, the damage of the Peshtigo Fire was staggering: The conflagration had consumed 1,875 square miles, obliterated 12 communities, and caused the deaths of between 1,500 and 2,500 people."

Can't blame DEW for these. (I am very dubious of Claims of DEW initiated fires this given the proximity of USN and USAF bases within close radar sweep.) People made mistakes that caused or amplified the spread of these fires. Sounds like the same on Maui. (Did not shut the power down, did not sound the alarm, did not release water.)

Re: Maui Fires

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Out of curiosity, I wonder how many of the houses in Lahaina had wooden shake roofs. Those dry out and are basically kindling.
Mililani had a HOA-type setup where shake roofs were pretty much required in order to keep the appearance of the neighborhood.
OWB, do you recall the stink of when someone dared put a blue roof tile setup on their house in Miliani Town?
Your explaination of the Maui firest is succint, factual, and accurate. I wish people would stop with the DEW nonsense.... Samd thing with the Paradise fire. The buildings in Lahaina were very close together.
close buildings got to be a uge problem on all the islands. If you notice in some of the aerial shots of the burn areas the ash piles pretty much touch each other.
The original lot sizes kept things spread out reasonably well but over the last half dozen decades there has been a lot of “infilling.” One of the things I got called on to do, as an old surveyor, when there was a property sale, was to stake the correct property lines. Lots of families, etc. didn’t mind sticking a new house right between two old ones-—for the kids, doncha know. So, yeah, there is a lot of buttsup, way too close, non-standard, non-code, housing.
