You raise an interesting point, ferret. Let’s say I find a hoard of Union gold. And I put some of it up for sale at an auction house. The FBI is alerted.
FBI agent: Where did you get that all that gold?
Me: It was passed down through the family. That’s all I know.
What would the FBI’s next move be? What could they do?
Side note: I don’t think FDR’s gold confiscation act applies. Because if it did, no one in the United States could own old gold coins today. And many people do, coin collectors especially.

No, the treasure hunters know that. They’re just trying to get the finder’s fee for helping with the recovery of gov. property (some percentage).

I hope you added it to the scheduled items on your home owners insurance policy.
My wife's wedding ring has two emerald in it. Lost one. Popped out never found it. The insurance paid to replace with no deductible.
To: metmom
Of course they didn’t.

Reminds me of the old prospector (in westerns) that hobbles into town with his mule and brags to everyone of his rich gold strike. And later has the mine stolen or he got dead.

They surly should have dug for it. The fact that they didn't....makes me very...very, very....suspicious.
I've done a bit of exploring...man...if we hit something....we dug and dug until we found it.
To: Red Badger
Kinda seems like it. I’d like to see his 1099’s.
To: ferret_airlift
Don’t dig up the whole thing. Work it out in small amounts. Or stash it elsewhere and work out a long term plan. But don’t tell the flippin’ FBI.

If Xiden is re-elected or his replacement is, expect that the government will make owning gold again illegal and force us to turn in everything except $100 worth of jewelry for fiat folding money.

In general, I’d be more concerned about the IRS. The only way the FBI would come into it is if they claimed it was Government gold. An army payroll, or some such.
