No offense to your daughter in law but it was easy to see that coming.
Even if she was a good employee, I'm sure she was, you have too many other employees taking advantage of WFH arrangement so productivity is way down compared to what it was before when everyone worked in the office.
Our productivity has gone way up. We have meetings back to back that we could never have that way because they would have required travel on different days.
We can reach through any team to get to the right person. No more time-wasting meetings. Staff's behavior changed for the better because we can now see exactly where each item is in the pipeline. We never had that in the office.

I think it’s it’s middle management being shown to be useless micromanagers for what they are.
All of my engineering projects have metrics attached.
I make them, or I do not.
Not in my experience in the software industry. Productivity and availability have increased significantly. Being bothered by people "stopping by your cube" and "water cooler time" have been eliminated. Travel time between meetings - eliminated. Asynchronous communication has been a great success. Synchronous is still necessary, but not like it is in person.
