At the very top of the thread it says ping - mail. When you get either one those words turn red.

I think the red mail Insignia doesn’t work all the time. I think I only see it on my comment page, not when I am inside a thread. I could be wrong, but there’s sometimes when it doesn’t show up. I think that’s why people tell each other that they have sent mail.
