Ukrainian farms are restricting winter grain sowing after Russia decided to withdraw from a grain deal that included a corridor for exports from Black Sea ports, Bloomberg writes.
HarvEast and Industrial Milk Company (IMK) have already reduced wheat sowing, the latter by a third, and stopped sowing winter oilseed rape altogether. Agricultural company Astarta has also reduced its harvests, according to the agency.
“Currently it is impossible to sell grain because the prices are below the production costs,” said IMK general director Alex Lissitsa.
The main beneficiary of Ukrainian farmers’ problems will be Russia, according to Hélène Duflo, an analyst at Strategie Grains. She said other major grain exporters - Canada, Australia and Argentina - are now struggling with their acreage. “Overall, global supply is once again focusing on Russia,” she believes.
