A New York mother has shared how she receives $84,000 of taxpayer cash a year towards her son's private education.
Melissa Petro's five-year-old son Oscar has ADHD, generalized anxiety, and a condition called pathological demand avoidance, which is defined by the Child Mind Institute as going to 'extremes to ignore or resist anything they perceive as a demand.'
His challenging behavior resulted in expulsion from his Hudson Valley public school two years ago.
Melissa and her husband scrambled to keep their son in education, turning to Otto Specht, a local Waldorf school, whose tuition fees, as well as the added cost of Oscar's individual accommodations and therapies totaled nearly $85,000 a year.
The couple emptied their bank accounts, savings and maxed out credit cards to afford the enormous bill, then successfully sued the school district for reimbursement and continued support.
'As a child with a disability, our 5-year-old son, Oscar, is legally entitled to early childhood services — and risks falling further behind developmentally without them' Melissa wrote in Insider.
Following Oscar's expulsion the school district failed to secure a spot for Oscar at another school or offer a compensatory service, so his parents felt they had no choice but to enroll him at a private school for children with sensory differences and learning challenges.
After doing so they sued the district for reimbursement after being told the authority were not legally allowed to place him at a private school.
The New York City schools chancellor, David Banks, has previously accused parents following this course of action of 'gaming the system' by taking advantage of the law to hustle their children into a free private education.
Melissa rejects this claim instead saying her family is simply 'desperate for help.'

I love it. The parents should say, “well your crappy system didn’t work.” Pay up.
child has L.O.B.
Lack of Belt
Thinking the same. My dad always got my attention.
I was recently scolded because I "reacted too harshly" to Youngest Daughter acting out. She still occasionally has trouble controlling her temper. Because she acted out she lost privileges. In that case the privilege to go to a party. When chided I responded that the adults run the house, not the child.
Youngest daughter asked why that man was so upset. I told her his mommy probably did not love him enough to correct him when he misbehaved.
My grandmother would have fixed that problem with a $.59 fly swatter.
Oscar sounds like a pain in the ass.
She should homeschool.
i worked for a guy who said “everybody knows, the kids in the family pick the restaurants” Not in my house, they did n’t.
( his girl was a holy terror- son was okay)
I think I had pathological demand avoidance when I worked at Taco Bueno. Then, they fired me.

I must confess that as a youth this excuse never occurred to me.
Another casualty of the modern mental health system, where kids are drugged and there are no consequences for rotten behavior.
I just do not understand parents who let their kids run the show. Love them dearly. Would die for them. But they are not in charge.
When we acted out our parents sent us to our rooms. Sometimes we had to say for days after school depending on how bad the offense was. My brothers and I called it “solitary confinement”
Wow, they have finally came up the a diagnosis that describes me to a tee. My two X-wife's can confirm it.
There is ALWAYS something that needs to be done and usually the stuff is uncomfortable, stinky and tedious winter or summer.

Anything that breaks the pubrik skrewel system is a good thing.
Strange that 50 years later they are just recognizing this.
Oh yeah, my mother could wield a belt like nobodies business.
I had many a whippin’.
Although, I do think it caused me to be more stubborn.
