Prior to the bombshell arrest on Thursday of Rex Heuermann over several of the Gilgo Beach murders, the case had been hampered by a series of scandals inside the police department leading the investigation.
The disgraced former chief of Suffolk County Police Department, James Burke, was at the center of the storm, which culminated in his imprisonment in 2016 for 46 months for battering a thief who stole a bag from his police car which contained porn and sex toys.
Shocking details emerged about Burke's alleged fondness for drugs and prostitutes. He has also been described by colleagues as a 'psychopath' who was always 'horny' and thought he was 'untouchable'.
Burke is also accused of stymying the Gilgo Beach case in its early stages by blocking the FBI's role in the investigation.
He forged a 'tough cop' reputation throughout his career that included dubious policing tactics and a penchant for cigars dipped in cherry brandy. Burke, who enjoyed a close relationship with several disgraced local officials, rose through the ranks of the department despite scandals that included sleeping with a prostitute in his patrol car.
Burke's alleged secret taste for drugs and prostitutes came to light in 2015 after he was investigated for attacking Christopher Loeb, a young heroin addict who stole a bag from the police chief's car.
Inside the bag, Loeb found sex toys and a porn DVD with sickening footage that showed a bound and gagged women being tortured.

If you mean that police chief, I would bet he’s a Democrat or Independent. If he was a Republican, that would be included in the first paragraph.
The Netflix version of this whole thing after the dust settles will be interesting.
The letter included specific allegations of misconduct and warned Bellone to bypass the ex-Suffolk County police officer and district attorney chief investigator: Burke “was known to frequent prostitutes” and “committed at least one armed home invasion” to retrieve a service weapon stolen from him by a prostitute. He interfered with an Internal Affairs investigation into an officer accused of assault. He used damaging information gleaned from a wiretap as leverage to control Bellone’s predecessor, Steve Levy (who was a Democrat until he switched parties in 2010). And he “threatens subordinates with forced transfers, and tells them he is untouchable and that they have no protection and that he will ruin their career forever.”
You won't read the background history in any current reporting because the MSM is most likely hoping people will assume his is a Republican.
Article is bunk. The PC had to run a K9 in there off the books because somebody was preventing him from going into the dumping grounds to look for Gilbert. This was his payback for not playing ball.
