I've said it before and I'll say it again: I just feel like there's some stuff they're not telling us about these electric cars...
A Rivian owner said his R1T electric pickup truck cost about $42,000 to fix after it was hit at a stoplight earlier this year, according to a report The New York Times.
Chris Apfelstadt told the publication that while he'd expected the repair wouldn't be cheap, it was a "shocking number."
The incident, which occurred February in Columbus, Ohio, was at first believed to be somewhat minor, according to the Times report, which said the other driver's insurance offered to pay about $1,600. But, after the electric car was taken to a repair shop that was certified to work with Rivian products the cost jumped to $42,000, the publication said.
Yeah I think it goes beyond that. "Shocking" is when you get the bill for dinner at La Guccia's and you find out that glass of wine cost $80. This is something else entirely.
The price tag was so high in part because the very minor accident "affected a panel that reaches from the back of the vehicle all the way to the front roof pillars of the truck," and the repair required the removal of both the ceiling and front windshield.
The extremely limited number of licensed Rivian repair centers also drives the cost up.
This is a cautionary tale, ladies and gents. If you ever find yourself ready to drop $90K on a robot-looking electric truck ... make sure you've got another half of that socked away in case someone looking at their phone bumps into you at a red light. 🤷♂️
Insanity. EVs are just not there yet, man.

A $1000 ‘discount’ on a $80k truck? What a joke................
Went to the local Ford Dealer to look at their trucks, and all they had in stock were the maxed out versions, power everything, Coca-Cola Cowboy models. They cost more than my house did.......................
“Buy a ticket and watch a movie, all while the car gets a free charge.”
There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch, or a free charge.
Movie heaters are dead and bankrupt in my area. A buyer for the property isn’t going to spend millions for some zany idea of free charging to attract customers.
Yeah, I think it’s a liberal small penis thing to have one of those.
Why they sell us free stuff all the time, every day and we buy it.
I’ll be keeping my decades old Toyota 4Runner.☺
The ripoff factor was baked right into the design.
I really love drive-ins.
My neighbor and me took the kids to see Lion King at a South Carolina drive-in years ago.
We had a cooler and a pillowcase of popcorn.
What a day and so much fun. *sigh*
oh oh and those little mosquito coils burning, I love the smell of them. hahahaha
Even better—Let’s market a Tesla Truck-compatible window decal. It would be a smash hit!
People that buy Ev’s have more $$$ than brains.
Must not have used any 50 year-old white guys for engineers......................
I will fix it for half that with some bondo and spray paint.
I’m facing the same issue with my F-150. It’s a 2004 with a little over 200k miles on it, it’s a basic super cab truck with very few options other than air conditioning. A direct replacement for it is north of $70k.
It’s of the age where I can still do most of the work on it so I will repair it as long as I possibly can. Fortunately, we don’t have rust problems here in the southwest.
And some Gorilla Tape.....................
Very ugly car. The biggest problem this guy did was chose his own repair shop. Anytime I deal with insurance, I always go to where they send me. I’ve never paid more the 500 dollars on any repairs. Now granted it’s not an electric car, but I’d think it work the same way. Insurance sends you to a repair shop. You pay deductible.
The GIGA press gives Tesla the price competitive edge to make vehicles cheaper. Especially in China where there are no UNIONS.
I’m in that same spot with my 2000 Toyota Avalon. I inherited the car from my folks, so it has very low 85K miles. I was hoping to drive the thing until ICE engines become prohibited by law, but it overheated and the radiator repair guy said the heads probably got warped as it’s spitting a bit of liquid in the exhaust and misfiring once in a blue moon, so it’s asking, nicely, for the moment, for a head job. Ugh. $4K+. I guess if I cost-average that into the ten years over which I haven’t had to put any money into it, it’s nominal. But still painful, still more than what the whole car is worth, and easily a hole I could step into buying a replacement. Ah well. Maybe I join AAA and keep Uber on Speed-dial.
I saw one of those things, Fugly.
= = =
And you can’t park it outside your garage in a HOA.
Which is cool and it is a valid point. At the same time criticism of what passes for reporting is also valid.
