Maybe they wanted to ax the driver a question, and needed probable cause, so they wouldn’t be called racist.

They are duly sworn law enforcement, technically they can do that. Forest Rangers and Park Service can write tickets too, but it’s probably pretty rare. Game Wardens can do a lot of stuff that the police are technically forbidden to do without a warrant.

Some folks surmise the 87k new aeye are ess employees are part of some future gun confiscation scheme cooked up to take advantage of some arcane loophole or provision. Anyway the question isn’t if they can.

The question is why they decided to pull that guy over. Has to be more to the story, because ordinarily they would never bother.
