The US Secret Service is seeking a driver who killed one pedestrian and injured at least two others while fleeing a police traffic stop near the National Mall in Washington DC.

The shocking incident occurred shortly before 1.30pm on Wednesday, when uniformed Secret Service agents attempted to pull over a vehicle near 17th Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW, an agency spokesman told DailyMail.com.

Lt. Paul Mayhair of the Secret Service Uniformed Division said federal agents with the division tried to pull over the vehicle after spotting its expired registration.

'The suspect indicated that they would stop the vehicle, but then quickly fled southbound on 17th Street NW,' said Mayhair in a statement.

While fleeing, the driver ran a red light and struck several people walking through the intersection, fatally injuring one of them, he said.

The victim who died was a 75-year-old man, who was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but did not survive, according to NBC4 Washington.

Two others were treated at the scene for minor injuries, the outlet reported.

The driver remained at large on Wednesday evening, and an alert has been issued to law enforcement agencies in the area to be on the lookout.

The alert describes the suspect vehicle as a blue 2006 Honda Accord with Virginia tags 8718BE.

The tragic incident unfolded just steps from the National Mall, the iconic park adjacent to the White House and US Capitol building.

More than 25 million people visit the National Mall each year, according to National Park Service data, and on any given day it is packed with tourists from around the world, as well as the many federal employees who work in nearby buildings.

“Depends on how close the car was to the White House.”

The Secret Service has nothing more important to do than stop cars with bad tags because they are too close to the white house?

No they would have surrounded that vehicle with tons of assets if they suspected something worse was up.

They are duly sworn law enforcement, technically they can do that. Forest Rangers and Park Service can write tickets too, but it’s probably pretty rare. Game Wardens can do a lot of stuff that the police are technically forbidden to do without a warrant.

Some folks surmise the 87k new aeye are ess employees are part of some future gun confiscation scheme cooked up to take advantage of some arcane loophole or provision. Anyway the question isn’t if they can.

The question is why they decided to pull that guy over. Has to be more to the story, because ordinarily they would never bother.

I will in no way defend the trash driver who killed a pedestrian. Such a person needs to be sent away for 15 years or so.

Only 15 years? I have a friend who was killed. He was in his early 40's and left behind a 9 year old, 7 year old and a pre-school child. Also a wife. 15 years doesn't make up doesn't begin to make up for that loss.

I didn’t know that the Secret Service enforced traffic laws.

SS doing minor traffic stops?

Either they are even more incompetent than I thought, or there more to this story. If there is, it is unlikely we’ll ever hear it.

I perusing this thread I saw thaat about half question why the Secret Service were doing a traffic stop. I suspect they have more information on this then they have revealed. I have no problem with that. We also do not know if they maintained pursuit, just because the article says they were fleeing, it does not mean that they really were being pursued.

The mere fact the the driver decided to flee at a high rate of speed tells me that he probably really is a bad guy.

This article has all of the sizzle and very few of the facts.

This is normal for Secret Service?

Where does it say there was a chase?

It only states that the car driver fled. Likely left the SS behind.

This is normal for Secret Service?

This incident involves US Secret Service Uniform Division...

"Today, the Uniformed Division has grown both in size and scope of responsibility and is mandated by law to provide physical security for the White House Complex and the vice president’s residence at the Naval Observatory. It also provides security for the Treasury Department building and foreign diplomatic missions in Washington, D.C."

I guess this car attracted the attention of some Secret Service Officers who were in a patrol vehicle...Near some federal facility...

US Secret Service does have Special Agents...Protecting President...Catching counterfeiters...

TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. is a good movie about US Secret Service agents...Movie is mostly about agents chasing counterfeiters...

Right, but we’re SS standing on a street corner un SC and happened to see a car with bad tags? Where were the SS that they could see this. Something smells in this scenario.

I’ve no idea, but my sense is they were in a car and made a stop, not standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona or whatever.
