I love those movies, and have a complete, remastered set.
The Charlie Chan character was almost always treated with dignity and respect. Police and governmental officials were happy to see him. None of them looked down at Charlie.
Now, here’s an interesting thing. There are a few scenes where some foppish white guy makes fun of Charlie or his accent.
The camera briefly pans over to Charlie’s face. There is a look of disgust. It’s brief, but it’s usually there. That’s something rather unusual for the 1930s! Credit to the director and the actor for doing that.
Lucy Liu wanted to produce a Charlie Chan series a few years back (presumably with an actual Asian lead actor) but never got off the ground. Which is too bad, because the film series was very solid
